Just got it put back together. Installed new upper and lower balljoints, notched my lower a-arms, and trimmed my spring pockets. All the cutting and trimming got me about another inch lower ! Frame lays flat in front now. Hope to get the back bagged some time in the near future.

Let me know what you all think.

That is awesome. What in God's name do you have in there that idles so low and gives you such a beautiful exhaust rumble.

Edit: Sorry to overlook your drop and bags....I was just blown away from the engine. Really cool. Can you do that front and back?

I agree with Rinkrat! Your truck sounds so damn good! Ohh and the bags look really good too! Keep the videos coming!

My lil 305 with straight hedders. Is running like crap. Now it won't hardly turn over. Acks like the battery is dead. Starter might be going out to. Thanks for the positive feedback. Hopefully I'm doing something right !!

Yes I had it recorded in black and white. Gives it a old school look !!!!!!!!

Kinda of an update.
My starter did go out so I ripped the body off of it and started on the rear bag setup. I made my own notch, making my own 4link and barckets. I'm waiting to a pinion angle finder so I can make my top bars, and bags so I can make my own bag brackets. I have attached a couple pics of my progress so far and nowhere near done. All the money I have in the rear so far is the welding wire, a cutoff wheel of my chop saw, and a cutoff wheel for my angle grinder. All the metal was free!!!!! Everything measures out like it did before the metal work!!!!!!! Being this is my first real fabracation work I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys! It kinda sucks now that I have to put my truck on hold now cause were in the process of buying a house. On the plus side I'll have a 2car garage with a concrete floor!!!!!!!!!! I'll miss the space in my 24'x40' shop I have now with dirt floor. Even trade though. I thought my truck was moving along slow now LOL!

Man it's been awhile since I posted anything about my truck. Well I'm attempting to upload some photos of where it is now in the build.

I haven't got any farther than this. It's bodydropped 2.75 inches and the doors are 2 inches off the ground! I still got alot of work ahead of me but I hope to have it out cruising this comming spring! I just bought a tilt steering column for it for $65.00! What a steal!

Rinkrat456
11-01-2006, 09:32 PM
You da man! Nice work.

Just out of curiosity, can you close your hood? That Edelbrock air cleaner looks like it gets in the way.

97v8s10
11-01-2006, 09:41 PM
No the hood won't close. I have a 72 mustang ramair hood that I might graft to the hood or I will build a 4" cowl hood out of the stock hood. Even though the stock hood is very thin.

Rinkrat456
11-01-2006, 10:43 PM
Why does the little 305 sit sow high up? What mounts did you use? I've seen smallblocks in S10's with fullsize air cleaners, and you have the small thin Edelbrock one so that's why I was wondering.

danssoslow
11-01-2006, 10:52 PM
Why does the little 305 sit sow high up?

It's bodydropped 2.75 inches and the doors are 2 inches off the ground!

Hoodline dropped 2 3/4", the engine stayed the same.

Rinkrat456

"I see!" said the blind man.

Hmm....so a body lift would actually make it easier to get a V8 and transmission in, wouldn't it?

97v8s10

Danssoslow is correct. Might have to get me a bug catcher for it too!

11-04-2006, 10:18 PM
How close is that crossmember to the ground? I'm sure it's just how the pic makes it look, but it isn't below the scrub line, is it?

97v8s10
11-05-2006, 09:04 AM
The crossmember is a little over 2 inches off the ground. Once I start making the exhaust I will need to notch the crossmember on both sides.

97v8s10
11-05-2006, 08:41 PM
Here is a better pic of the crossmember for you Danssoslow. To show you the groung clearence. Oh... and it's 2.75 inches off the ground.

With all this talk about your truck is the customization bug coming back?

97v8s10
11-05-2006, 08:51 PM
I went out to the garage today to clean up and I figured I'd start working on a new crossmember to take place of the stock gas tank crossmember. So I can run longer upper 4-link bars. Woot! Figured I snap a pic tp show the clearence for him.

This is your thread...do what you want with it! I highjack my V8 threads all the time asking different off-topic questions and such. If you want, ask a Moderator to rename this thread to "Laying body project...56k beware" or something since you have a lot of high-res pics. 02WhtXblazer doesn't have anything else to do at work anyway, PM him.

Not that this is a big update or anything but I finally got my tilt steering column and after I sat in the truck with it bolted up my first thought was...where have you been all my life! I love tilt steering. Here's some pics

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/CIMG0673.jpg

Ok here is some comparison photos.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/CIMG0681.jpg
This pic is roughly not tilt height. Keep in mind the seat tracks have been sectioned 1 inch.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/CIMG0682.jpg
This is all the room I'll ever need! (I love you tilt column!)

Now the biggest decision I need to make is which airbag to use? ( What do you guys think?)

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/CIMG0676.jpg

Hopefully I do a little work on it this weekend.

Ron

Well today I was in the garage...... WOOT!!!!
Well anyways I was trying to finish the new crossmember I am making. I got it cut to lengh and I started to make my angle cuts will my chopsaw decided it didn''t wan't me to continue. I got 95% throught the first angle and the chopsaw made a loud pop and shot 2 foot flame out of both sides of the mtor. ....... :angry2:
Everytime I try do do something to this dang truck there is alwasys a freaking setback. Now who knows when I can get a new chopsaw. :(

97v8s10
11-12-2006, 08:22 PM
Well I decided to clean the garage out today and while I was moving the frame out my tack welds broke loose on the frame horns so I had to put everything back together. Figured I'd push it outside and take some pics.

Lol Nice 2x4's! Just out of curiosity...why such a small radiator? You've got to teach me how to weld. I tried at work and my welds suck.

Rob
11-20-2006, 11:19 PM
...You've got to teach me how to weld. I tried at work and my welds suck.

Get a basic welding book, lots of welding gas, wire and metal and go at it. That's how I learned.

97v8s10
11-21-2006, 07:29 AM
I think the radiator will be fine. It is as wide as the inside of the core support and all aluminum. Welding takes time. I'm not perfect yet but I'm getting better. Also I"m using flux core wire so my welds still look like crap.

You'll soon learn that fiberglassing scares people away at first with how "complex" it may seem but just as you found out with Bondo, it's easy. If you ever need help with fiberglassing, or getting started or need ideas PM me. I've been getting the itch to get back into a fiberglass build.

I was starting to get in the groove again. I figured since I had a little extra time the past few days I would try to get some stuff done. Now everything is going downhill. Little did I know the tranny crossmember I build and was so proud off is to high and the tailshaft of the tranny is hitting the trans tunnel!!! Next I spent half of the day this past saturday getting the manifolds and the y-pipe off of a truck to put on inplace of the hedders I got now(I don't like how they bottom out on the upper control arms when layed out. Well the passinger side fit awesome. Then I get to the driverside and the collector hit the upper control arm so there was no way to bolt up the exhaust. To top it off I can't even use the y-pipe with the hedders I got now. I got half a mind to cut the tranny tunnel out and raise the motor to have it sticking out the hood like the old ratrods!! Then all I gotta worry about is the steering shaft.

Rinkrat456

TheNumberOneStunna
11-21-2006, 10:10 PM
Speaking of cowl hoods. Mine should be here in 6 days. Can't wait. I'll post some pics once it's painted.

TheNumberOneStunna

I ordered it off of stylinconcepts.............its nothing compared to a 6". I think its like 2" or 2.5", correct me if I'm wrong.

97v8s10
11-22-2006, 01:33 PM
A cowl hood will really set your truck off! Can't wait to see it. i want mine to look low and mean. I'll cruise at low psi and with a 6 cowl hood I hope it will look mean.

I thought the same thing.

Rinkrat456
11-22-2006, 06:49 PM
Funny!

Yea I thought about that too after I posted. Sanding fiberglass does itch - even worse than putting up insulation in homes. A nice hot shower takes out most of the glass shards but I tend to do all my sanding in a couple day time so sleeping at night doesn't hurt for weeks.

97v8s10
11-22-2006, 07:06 PM
When I got to fiberglass my interror I'm sure I'll be asking alot of questions avout fiberglassing if I don't figure it out on my own.

11-23-2006, 10:03 PM
Not much will be done to the truck this weekend due to a having a birthday party and I have to go work on a truck for my mother in-law. :(
The bright side to this ia I bought a spindle adapter formy welder so I can use 10lbs spools!!!!!!!!!! :) I wasn't to happy when the 10lbs spool I bought was $56. After I use this roll of wire I'm gonna look into getting a mig conversion kit so I can run gas and the mig wire is only around $25 for a 10lbs spool!!!!

97v8s10
12-07-2006, 06:46 PM
Well I haven't touched my truck for a while but that will soon change. I just ordered $500 worth of parts to get my trucks rear setup done. I still don't have an air system but that will be hopefully a couple more months for that. I will post pics of the parts when they come in.

Side note...Gotta love Christmas bonus's!!!!!!

whew i guess iv been living under a rock , iv always wondered who this new guy was with a 2nd gen with no grill , great 2 see tha project comeing alone great ,

dont see 2 many draggers with v8s or any engine modifications at that ,

nice job an work , seems like tha tanks fill quick ,

with flux core run high enough amp you dont even need 2 move the stinger just push it along , its so hot an fills so good wont be a problem , love how the slag just comes right off

with regular mig my shop is drafty the sheilding gas would get blown away start seeing nasty ones ,

stick is a hard one also getting it 2 arc is fun an then getting over 2 tha seem an then getting your technique down right is a big hassle ,

iv made my friends a ashtray outta 1/8 steel plate an 1/4 floor , told em if he could break it than ill hang up my helmet ,

you can see tha sides are bent but my weld seems are still untouched ,

even told me he spked it off a 5 story parking garage an hit a rock still didnt do anything

The wheels are billet. They are Centerline Rhinos. I was having trouble finding 2 more wheels to match them and I came across the Camaro wheels and bought them for $80. Thanks to Rinkrat I have 4 new tires to put on them so I'll just keep them. They will be a mix of paint and pollish when the truck is done. As for the motor I'll just fix the crossmember so the tranny isn't hitting the bottom of the cab. I really want to make a 6" cowl hood for it. If not I'll finish the fenders and cowl so it looks like it was desighed without a hood.

Thanks for the props!

Well parts should be here Monday and I'll get pic of them. Hopefully I can get the new tires mounted by friday so I can setup the rear. Hopefully I'll have the rear done by Sunday. I also bought a 12.75" single row led lightbar from Sam to use as a 3rd brakelight. He had got rid of the leds in his rollpan and has caddylights in the pan now. Thanks again Sam and can't wait to get it!

Suicidedoors is awesome! Everything I've got from them is awesome!
I forgot to take pics of the other stuff. I got filler plates for my gas lid and for my mirrors. ( c-ya later mirrors! ) I also got a cantilever bag bracket kit. I plan on moving my lower link bars inside the frame and mounting the bags ontop of the bars for more lift and a better ride.

I know you were asking for performance tires, or at least not All-Season tires but I figured those would work just fine for any "spirited" driving you may do. I just put those same tires, different size, on our HHR and I've tried to slide, I've tried to break the tires loose and I can't. They're so soft they stick to the road like none other. Not to mention 4 tires for what...80 bucks? Something like that. If you last another 80k miles, so will those tires. They're rated for 80k miles but I'm assuming you'll have the back tires gone in less than a year.

awesome fab jobs beckner. I'm defintely keeping my eye on this thread for when i start my body drop. I've got a friend who's gonna hook me up with 2x3x20' 1/4" wall for $200. I've heard thats a fairly decent price at about $10 a foot.

and i'm still working on getting a built 4.3 from a friend of mine

I think someone has been bitten by the customization bug again. Remember not too long ago you had lost motivation? Good to see you're back in the game.

On a side note, where do you find metal tubing like that? I need 3x3 square metal tubing at least 1/4" to 3/8" thick and about 40" long. I'm making a crossmember for those leaf spring hangers and being so new to the whole gig I don't know where to get my supplies. I've been in the whole customizing thing for 3 years now but I have only been doing major fabrication for less than a year so I'm still trying to figure out who sells what. I also need a 3/8" thick sheet of metal maybe 2'x2' to cut leaf spring hangers out of.

97v8s10
12-20-2006, 06:21 PM
Yeah spending $500 inparts will get a person moving! You should be able to get the steel you need from your local welding/ machine shop. All of the steel I have been using only cost me $15! I bought alot of 2x2 from my work cause they were scrapping it.

Rinkrat456
12-20-2006, 08:23 PM
You should be able to get the steel you need from your local welding/ machine shop.

That's my problem really, not knowing where any of the local welding/machine shops are. I'd ask my dad but he'd just get into an argument about why I don't need to fabricate anything for my truck and if I asked any of the older guys at work I'll be laughed at for "doing something to my truck that can't be done!" as they always say.

Unfortunately I'm on my own for 99% of what I do. The guys at work still don't believe me that a V8 fits in my truck, and even after showing them pictures of a completed SFA conversion they still say it shouldn't be done. A lot of opinions keep me from doing what I know can be done and it frustrates me.

On the same side note; would you say 3/8" thick aluminum is the same strength as 1/4" steel? I'm figuring going with thicker aluminum will save on weight when fabing up a front crossmember for my leaf spring hangers. Or do you not think aluminum is strong enough?

97v8s10
12-20-2006, 08:44 PM
Do you have a phone book? I would just call around and find what you want. As for the aluminum I don't have a clue. I've never used aluminum for anything. I guess I'm a steel guy  I see steel being easier to work with in your situation though. Well unless you know how to work with aluminum.

Rinkrat456
12-20-2006, 08:48 PM
I'm in the process of learning how to weld. We have two welders at work, one for frames that can go through an inch of steel and another that is specifically for aluminum so either way I'm set. I'm just trying to keep the weight gain to a minimum. The axle alone will add a ton of weight but I'm cutting off the A-arms, skid plate and whatever else is there for the front suspension. I'm keeping the sway bar though. So hopefully I'll come out close to even but most likely on the heavy side. Not to mention 33" tires.

97v8s10
12-20-2006, 08:57 PM
Well then I say give it a try! What's the worst thing that could happen? You mess up or it won't work, ect. Gotta learn sometime. You plan on the v8 conversion later down the road so I wouldn't worry about the added weight. Also when you start all the work on your truck there better be a project thread in your name pop up!!!

Well I guess I'll have to since there's no choice at all.

You bet there'll be a project thread, but probably not until after I'm done. I don't like people posting just saying to "get it done" so I'd rather just do it over spring break and then post everything when I'm finished so I can have some hard info to give people. Maybe I'll start one in the beginning, who knows. I'm just not very good at snapping pics while I work because I'm so into what I'm doing. And I don't want to get the camera all dirty/greasy. I also do a lot of my work at night so lighting isn't the greatest.

97v8s10

90% of the pics I take are at night and after I finish what I am working on. I try to go into the garage and concentrate on one thing. I get it done I snap a couple pics and go to the next thing I want to do and so on. Heck if nothing else when you start working on it email me some pics cause you will kill me with anticipation!!!!!!

...On a side note, where do you find metal tubing like that?...I'm still trying to figure out who sells what...

Try some of these places if you can't find a metal shop near you that has the materials you need:

www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com)
These guys have pretty good prices on raw materials. Go down to the bottom right of the page where it says "Raw Materials and Springs" and go to metals. It will show all metals: Aluminum, Steel, Stainless, Copper, etc. These guys are also great for just about anything you will need. We always say, if McMaster Carr doesn't have it, it doesn't exist.

www.metalexpress.net (http://www.metalexpress.com)

www.onlinemetals.com (http://www.onlinemetals.com)

If you want to use aluminum for anything, you the 6061 grade. It is slightly cheaper and can be used for many things. It welds and machines nice, but doesn't bend well unless you use an inside radius at least the thickness of the material. If you need any sheet aluminum (thin stuff) that needs to be bent, use the 5052 grade. It bends and welds well. It can also be welded to 6061 if you need too. For steel, you can use typical HRS (hot rolled steel) which should be fine, plus it will be cheaper. If you need nice, flat bar stock, use CRS (cold rolled steel).

If you have anymore questions about different materials for different applications, just ask. I've picked up a few things working and designing in a metal fab shop. I've also picked up quite a few fabrication techniques.

In many of your pictures you have that box of sugar packets. It's become a hide-n-seek thing for me whenever you post a pic and I look for it. lol

So from now to your "finished" idea what all needs to be done?

97v8s10
01-01-2007, 09:25 PM
I was suposed to work on my brother in-laws van so we set the bed on the back of the truck. I walked out to the garage and just had to see if the axle lined up in the wheel wells. I haven't had the bed on the truck in over a year so I was thrilled it lined up fanastic! The sugar packet box it all the bolts that came out ot the truck. I swear I can look at every bolt and I still know where 95% of them came from! As for what I need to get done. I need to get the other 2 tires mounted to see how much I need to tub the firewall, cut the firewall for tubs if needed so I can finish the front frame horns, get my lower link bars moved inside the frams so I can mount the bags on the bars for a better ride and better lift, fit my wishbone crossmember, then rip it all apart for frame prep to get ready for paint/undercoating? Not sure which one I want to do yet. I plan on driving it more than I showing it. After the frame prep I will start on the bodywork and bodydrop the bed.(not sure how I want to do that yet?) Lots of odds and ends work to do also. I better get this thing drivable by spring :frustrate

However! That motor needs a longer arm and a few more ponies. I wouldn't worry too much about swaping rear ends until you break the 7.625".

Want a 5.7L in place of that 5.0L? Block, crank, rods, bearings and .030" over pistons. $200 if you find a way to ship it, I can put it all on one pallet.

I'm going the 6.0L route and need to get rid of either the 5.3L block or the 5.7L block says dad, in order to purchase another one. By selling the 5.7L and buying a 6.0L we still have seven motors sitting in the garage waiting for a home. Four are mine, lol.

It's been cleaned up, .020" over. I didn't hone it to .030" over knowing that it wasn't going in my truck right away. We hone each cylinder to match the piston at .030" over so tollerances are tighter, then the rings are filed to fit right before the build. The pistons are hypereutectic aluminum flat tops designed for 9.9-10.1:1 compression depending on chamber size and head gasket. Other than that, the block has been magnafluxed and checked for cracks, pressure washed and painted black. The entire rotating assembly has been balanced already.

I decided to go back to stock taillights cause I was not happy with the foot of bondo I had to use to make the F.B.I. fillers work right. Also I think I will go back to having a bumper later on instead of the AIM rollpan that I have. It was off at the bottom alittle over half an inch. I didn't install it. It was before I had a welder. I had a friend weld it in. I can fix it but I think I want to go a diferent was with my bed.

As for the taillight I think I will mount them upside down it the stock location cause I have never seen a truck like that around here. I will probally go back to having a tailgate also since everybody is starting to mold there bed shut around here.

Well I won't be putting the 2600 bags in the front as of now due to the fact that the bottom cups for the front bags are not drilled for the larger bags. It has the threaded studs that fasten the cup to the lower control arm in the way. Maybe later down the road I'll get bigger bags and different cups.

Thanks Steve! I have the cab of and the front suspension half apart ready to prep the frame. I have to pull the motor and tranny also. I will not be able to work on my truck for a good 2 weeks due to my wife working this week and going on vacation next week.

I am such a bad owner. I swear I got my s10 Feb 15 1999 but my title says I bought it in 2000. So I've only had it for 7 years. I haven't plated it in 3 years! Man I hope I don't have to pay any back taxes on it.

Well it's gona take alittle longer for me to get the truck on the road now. I went out to work on it today and was pulling the front suspension apart and found the boots on my upper balljoints all ripped up. :angry2: I knew the balljoints were binding at full drop but I didn't think it was that bad. Done it on both sides. So I will be looking to purchase new tubular upper control arms to fix this. Balljoints had no miles on them. Then I went to pull the hard brake lines apart from the calipers and the stupid fittings round off. :angry2: Brand new brake lines. I'm gonna look around for some stainless steel brake lines for it now. I just need to find out if the 1st gen kits will fit the 2nd gen trucks. Since I'm running a 1st gen brake setup. Ok I'm done ranting.

If anybody had a suggestions about the brake lines I'm all ears.

That's the only space I have to put them. I tried them in a few different positions but they would bind. If I didn't do my bags over axle I would've had more room to try diffrent shock setups.

Do you think the way I have them set up won't work? They worked well through the up and down motion.

I'm pretty sure they will work fine. I was just curious as to how you came up with the position thats all. I"m sure that as long as thy don't bind they should be fine. Right now i'm still running my rear shocks in their original stock location but as for the front I have none. But you couldn't tell if you were riding in the truck. I have ABSOLUTELY no bounce in the front. Now the back thats a different story. I tried not having shocks in the back. Hell NO it was like being on a water bed when youcome to a stop!!

Exactly. The front wouldn't be that bad without shocks due to all the weight. The rear would bounce all over the place. I have seen people run some ratchet strap around there rearend and the bridge work on the frame to help control the bounce. When they didn't run shocks anyway.

beck if ya use flat top pistons they normally run a 10:1 compression with the standard small block heads......the 305 headswhile they have smaller valves they will make up for it by giving you give you about 11.25:1 compression due to the smaller chamber size so just be carefull here and watch the fly cuts (valve reliefs) on the pistons too ya might need to modify those just a bit as well

Ok I had an idea on my upper control arms that I want to run by you guys.
I've seen this done on other sites. The idea is to pie cut the upper control arms to change the angle of the balljoint so it doesn't bind when layed out. Should I do this. Worst case senerio is they don't work and I still have to by the tubular arms.
Feedback=Awesome! :cool:

Google Por-15 for frame coating. I think you can get it in colors, but the most important thing is that it's a rust preventative. Kinda pricey, but 1 quart goes a long way. If I wasn't doing Herculiner to my frame for ruggedness, I'd do Por-15 just like every other vehicle in my garage.

Edit: Nvm, I'll spare you the search.

I can turn the wheel to full lock and the tire barely hits the lower shock stud. I think I like the frame red. What do you guys think?

Napolehahn
04-22-2007, 05:00 PM
Red would be a nice change from the standard black. It all depends on what your finished color is going to be on the truck though.

Rinkrat456
04-22-2007, 05:06 PM
What color you paint your truck after will be the determining factor if the red frame looks good. Granted, you wont really see your frame, but if for example you have a blue body and air up the bags until you see frame, red will look really bad. lol . So I guess it's all dependant on the paint job. Usually contrasting colors look really good together, but the contrast color of that shade of red is baby light blue. I think some version of a pearl white with a red pinstripe down the side would look awesome, and tie the frame in perfectly.

97v8s10
04-22-2007, 05:53 PM
I thinking either Victory red or a satin red using the Hot Rod Flatz paint. The frame will be painted the same color as the body. All suspension parts will be black. I want to paint it two tone black on top red on bottom but everybody is doing that. I may do black flames with a silver pinstripe. All of this is still in the air since I'm not that far yet. I want to have the body work done before I start painting. The red I used on the frame isn't the perminant color.

I'm open to suggestions for paint schemes as long as they aren't expensive.

Worked a little in the garage today. My back has been hurting me more lately so it has hampered my productivity. Anyway I worked on my upper control arm on the passanger side today. We won't let it die until after you declare your truck finished. Even once you get it out on the road this thread wil still be kickin til you call it quits and start a new one.

I hear ya. I'm currently working on my fiancee to get her to let me spend a little cash on it as a wedding gift. Nothing major just a little something that I can build off of down the road. I just need to get my fix. lol

Here's a few pics of my cab and bed back on. Hopefully the next time I post pics in this thread the bed will be half way done.

Notice the mirror missing on the passenger door? Well I literly grabbed it and ripped it off the door! It was in the way when My friend and I turned the bed around to put it on the frame.
