That truck looks very solid. What are your plans for it? What is the first thing you are going to do?
97v8s10
01-14-2008, 05:33 PM
Bodywork. lol I'll tear it down and the first mod I will do is shave the drip rail. There is a lot of body filler on this truck so I will strip it all down and go from there. I won't be running bumpers on this truck either. The mounts will be removed and shaved. I could type forever but I'll save some for later.

Ford did make a 460 BB, but I don't think they are the best from what I've heard.

Figured out the fuel pump is bad. Poured a little gas in the carb and it fired right up. So I plan on a new MSD fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and fuel cell. With the fuel cell I probaly need to have one custom made to fit in the bed correctly.

If you look real close in the picture of the rear coils you'll see the driverside coil has moved half way off the axle mount.

You wanted a project... Well you certainly got yourself one. But it does look like a fun one though.
mreed
01-26-2008, 06:00 AM
Ahhh...I was wondering why the side to side tub was so damn big. When you bag it you'll be able to cut that down quite a bit making it much easier to fit in a fuel cell. The coil has probably been cut...that's probably why it's slipping out. No biggie though, if you decide to keep coils all you'll hafta do is take the coils out & weld a piece of 2 1/2" tube about 2 or 3" tall to the perch and put the coils back in. That'll keep them in place.
97v8s10
01-26-2008, 10:29 AM
I hope to get better pictures of it today. No coils for me. It has to have airride! The frame is narrowed in the rear so I could fit some wide ass rims and tres in the back if I wanted to.
mreed
01-26-2008, 04:29 PM
Is the rear end narrowed?

Here is a little progress. I started shaving the drip rail on the passanger side today.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/1957%20Ford%20F100/CIMG1930.jpg
This is why drip rails suck
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/1957%20Ford%20F100/CIMG1931.jpg
If you can't see it. Where the drip rail was it full of holes.
97v8s10
01-28-2008, 09:09 PM
Now this pics is how not to shave an antenna hole.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/1957%20Ford%20F100/CIMG1932.jpg
It's actually braised. The metal wasn't cut to fill the hole. It was a long strip under the hole.
This is how I fixed it.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/1957%20Ford%20F100/CIMG1933.jpg
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/gotv8s10/1957%20Ford%20F100/CIMG1934.jpg
Should only take a minimal amount of body filler to smooth out. I was able to recreate the curve very well in my book.

After thinking about it alot, I will be doing a full backhalf. This truck will lay on 22's!I need to decide what size of tire I can run so I can get.
I've been searching around trying to cross refference tires ans have come up with this.
245/35/22 is roughly 28.75 overall diameter
235/75/15 is roughly 28.88 overall diameter
Does anyone think the 22's will fit under the truck with that tire size? I really need to find some used 235/75/15's to see if I can get them to fit. Anybody got any?

22's on a '57 Ford truck. :frustrate You will be bringing on the wrath of hell from many who see the '57 as something worth restoring to mint condition.

WEB-BM 7FC

From what I gather is is a 2.75 with an open dif :(
2.75 seems a tad low. Here's a way to tell if that number is close. You'll need to be able to spin the rear tires freely.
Chalk a mark on the pinion or just remember what point you're looking at, and watch how many times the driveshaft makes complete revolutions until the tire makes 1 full revolution. The number of times the pinion goes around completely is the gear ratio.
For example, it would take the pinion 4-1/4 (actually 4.30) turns for one rotation of my tire on Max.
97v8s10
01-31-2008, 04:33 PM
The 2.75 gears were offered in my year of truck. That's what the tag says. I want to drive it first before I jump the gun and order an expensive posi for it. The rear could have had some work done to it since I was told it was a drag truck.
Rinkrat456
01-31-2008, 05:24 PM
If you're looking at just the tag, the gears could have been changed since then, considering the truck is over 50 years old. That was the case with a Ford 8.8 I picked up, the tag said 3L73 (locking 3.73 differential) but I later found the gears had been changed over the course of the Explorer's life for 4.10's.

It is too bad you have to get rid of the truck. That beast looked like a fun project. Although a Super Coupe could be equally fun. How good of shape is it in and is it standard?

And guess what i found..it looked to be the exact truck. i ask him and i believe he told me it was a 57 also..it looks identical, its flat black or black primer even. i have no interest in the truck, he drives a rig so it will set there for ever im sure..so if ever your wantin another then let me know, ill get some info for you. he sold the car hauler for 50.00 so it might be able to be had for next to nothing. as soon as i seen it i remembered you was talkin bout having to get rid of yours..

Please post them if you can.
Rrrgg...I have pics spread all over the place on several diff. computers! I can't remember where they all are. Here's the only one I have on this one (I think). I'm tired of looking...but here ya go. This was at ITB 07. I saved it when I was browsing web sites because it was for sale & a friend of mine was asking about it.

Thanks Mike. That picture confirms the shoddy job was done before the guy I got it of of. Since the guy didn't show up or call me yesterday I may end up keeping this truck.

Back from vacation and decided I'm keeping this truck. (no matter how much I need a better daily) So here's what's new.
Pics first.

New cluster mocked in.
My worst fear was realized as I pulled the crappy cluster. The wiring harness is really hacked up. I'm talking bad. I don't know how it even works. LMC has a new harness for $400. Ebay I have found one for $350 not counting shipping.
I may try to unhack the harness since there isn't much to it but it will still be a pain in the butt.

Hacked up things. Thats why I'm leary off older vehicles, and ones people have already started. But I'm sure youll get it all figured out.

I'd say build a custom gauge panel with "custom" gauges and say f*ck the stock set up. If needed I could cut you out the panel when you figure it out.

Word...those trucks are soooo simple it would be a waste of money to buy a 3 or $400 harness. Gut every single wire in there and replace with new. Get an EZ or Ron Francis Bare Bones fuse panel (EZ Wiring is much cheaper) with a horn relay, turn signal flashers and the other necessities and call it a day. Seriously, once you start in on the new wiring it should only take a day.
Glad to see your keeping this truck

I like the price of the EZ Wiring harness but they all say they they use GM column plugs. How would I use this on my column? I'm having trouble locating a wiring diagram for my truck. Most of the factory harness I need is gutted out and I'm not sure where I would start. It may make more sence when I pull it out?

Sweet beck still got a truck project!!!!! Beck I agree with you on the stock cluster. It looks much better. But if I was you I would look for some good used classic style gauges for the truck, those after market ones aren't doing it justice.

You putting the whole drivetrain from the car into the truck, IRS and all?
How bout that floorpan/tunnel?
97v8s10
05-26-2008, 09:25 PM
Yes. The IRS and the firewall/ trans tunnel will be grafted into the truck. Using the firewall so I can use the heat/ AC uint out of the car and the trans tunnel so the console will fit the floor better.

I'm not exactly sure when they started putting the IRS under the tbirds. I used to have a 91 v8 (302) tbird and it also had the IRS. Not sure if the 89 or 90 model years did. Yeah getting everything grafted to the truck will be alot of work but in the long run it will be nice when something goes bad. I can just walk up to any parts counter and get the parts I need easily.

so i take it you are also using the dash from the thunder chicken as well as the console?? if so that would look pretty sic..and would be different as hell..if thats the game plan hope it goes the way you wantin it to ...make sure you post progress pics,,would love to see this transformation..their a couple trucks around here that have been interchanged..ones a newer ford f150 with an older maybe 50's style front end on it. then there is a 60-70ish chevy with a 90's step side bed..both are pretty sic trucks..ive thought bought tryin to gratf the front of a pt cruiser onto my s10 pickup, but anywho good luck

Yes.. I'm using the dash. With wise they are dang near identical. Which is good for me. I think all I'll have to do is trim a little off the dash where it meets the windshield. I'm only using half of the center console also. Since I'm using the rear seats out of the car. Gonna build a frame for it to mount to so I don't have to go buy a beanch seat to match the dash.

To my door is was $150.98 I won't be using it for awhile but at least I will have one. It will work well with my new air compressor. Well... new to me.

As far as I know they don't make block hugger headers for the 4.6 I've never made my own headers before. Looks like I'm gonna have to.
s10xtremist
06-25-2008, 10:33 PM
ZOOMIES!!! :D
Since you're gonna hafta make your own headers, you may as well make it easy to clear the steering box and make 'em "upside-down". Since they're gonna be upside-down you may as well make 'em with turbo flanges. Since they're gonna have turbo flanges you may as well bolt on some twin turbos. Since your gonna have twin turbos..... Well, just post pics when you get the header problem solved.
97v8s10
06-25-2008, 10:37 PM
lol... turbos are out of my budget.
steve
06-25-2008, 11:59 PM
How much hood clearance do you think you will have if you mount the engine where it is right now? Can you mount the engine up higher to give more header clearance?
mreed
06-26-2008, 01:48 AM
Zoomies would be really cool. I'd say try to raise the engine a bit & shorten the stock manifolds. If it comes down to making your own headers, you could tack everything in place & I could tig it all solid for you.
shooter
06-26-2008, 10:22 AM
Raising the engine up a bit could do the trick for you. I had to do that on mine. I raised mine up about 2 inches to clear the fuel pump, and shorty header flange. With yours though, where the exhaust exits may take some fabricating. You're good at that, so have you thought about notching the x-member a little to clear the exhaust, maybe?
97v8s10
06-26-2008, 05:16 PM
I won't need to notch the crossmmber cause the oilpan and passanger side exhaust clear just fine. I will try making some frame mounts and raise the motor up and see where it's at. I may also look into movine the steering box forward if I can.

On the 1950's trucks they had the manifolds upside down with a crossover pipe in the front of the engine over the intake manifold. That might add a nice old school touch to the modern drivetrain.

I'm diggin' the idea. It's a way for the new engine to pay homage to the old school way. Kinda like it's sayin, "See? I belong here." Some custom valve covers with "F O R D" embossed in them would be sweet.

That's a nice loo shop you got there...

07-21-2008, 05:14 AM
Wow! Looks MUCH more organized than when I was there. It doesn't matter what size of shop you have, as long are you are disciplined in keeping it organized, you'll have all of the room you need. Now build that truck!

07-21-2008, 07:23 AM
Thanks. It's really nice to be able to go to the toolbox and get exactly what I need cause know where it's at! I think I might pull the coil springs out of the front of th truck today and get measurements for the bag cups if your still up for making me a set Mike?
mreed
07-21-2008, 07:30 AM
Yep...no prob.

I don't want to belittle you but do you know what you need to measure for the bag cups?
Umm... yeah. I think you told me to measure the inside and outside of the coil spring and measure from the inside of the spring pocket to the lower a-arm.(arm all the way up) Correct?
mreed
07-21-2008, 05:59 PM
Yep. If you're willing to cut whatever it takes to let it go as low as possible then just bolt everything back up sans rim & coil spring...but considering how low your truck is already, I'd suggest mounting the wheel and jacking up the lower arm until the bottom of the tire reaches the lowest part of the rest of the truck. Take your measurement and subtract 3" (size of the bag collapsed)...There's some other stuff along with it too, like mounting the bag as low as possible in or on the arm but up high enough to make sure nothing rubs...and keeping the bottom bag plate at or below the pivot point of the control arm bushing but we'll jump that creek when we get that far.
97v8s10
07-21-2008, 07:02 PM
Well I would have had the measurements for you today but I fought and cut/ground a few bolts that would not come out. I need to take the swaybar out before can get the lower arm up all the way.
Now since I have to redo the floor/firewall I will be lowering the floor (or raising the body... however you want to look at it.) so the frame will need to be flat on the ground. My lower control arm is simular to a mustang II so I should just be able to weld a circle bag plate to it.
mreed
07-21-2008, 08:28 PM
Ahh yes...that is correct. For the best performance I can modify your lower arm to make it an actual a-arm instead of just a stick with a strut rod.
Anyway, if you know exactly what make/model of vehicle your front clip is from I can check my prints. Chances are that I have already made some for the clip you have.
97v8s10
07-21-2008, 08:49 PM
That would be wonderful but I don't know what the clip is from. It's simular to the mustang II in a lot of ways but the actual clip is different.? I will take better pictures for you in a day or two. Maybe you can guess what it is.
mreed
07-22-2008, 06:09 AM
K...if we can't figure out what it is exactly, I can still modify your current control arms deleting the binding strut rod and turn it in to an a-arm by adding a leg and cross shaft. You have the arms and the clip. There's nothing wrong with turning what you already have in to something better. It would probably be easier that way.

This is all the space I have to run a bigger rim and tire combo. No way with the way it sits can I run 22's. The tire size on the rims now is 195/50R/15.
I guess I'll have to figure out how to "Z" the front clip. Since I've never done one before.

That front clip kind of looks like an old Lincoln. I'm making some rear steer, strut rod delete a-arms at work right now...I'll look at the car when it gets here. Plenty of room for bags though...

A bit off the subject, but in the current Hot Rod mag they're doing some minor work to a junkyard 4.6 mod motor to get 400 NA hp from it. It's from a Crown Vic with 11x,xxx miles on it. I've only glanced at the story, but they haven't done very much. I know it's carb'd, though. I just saw that and thought it might interest you, Beckner.

With the experience you've attained body dropping your S10, you'll be able to Z your frame no prob. Once you get the needed measurement there are just 3 basic steps. 1st, Z the frame at the firewall. 2nd, drop the frame horns the same amount (you did this to your S10) 3rd, make your steering work again (you've also done this with your S10).
To run a 245/30/22 you'll need atleast a 2.5" Z to put your make it sits the way it does now with the 15's.
Ship me your lower arms and I'll turn them in to real a-arms that will accept an airbag. You'll have to make and install the tabs that the new legs will bolt to but that should be no prob because it looks like you have a ton of room.
Then you can replace that bulky strut rod x-member with a much cooler looking piece!

I'm going to bore the t-bird rims I have so they bolt up to the 57 so I can "Z" the frame. Then I will pull the arms and get your address to ship them. Or I could drop them off in persom maybe.

Good thing you open that frame up because that crap would have rotted out your frame in a matter of years.
mreed
07-25-2008, 03:59 AM
Yeah...boxing any area of the frame will cause that. Import minis are boxed from the factory and they rot out so bad that they eventually break. If you're going to box any of that back in I'd suggest drilling a few small holes so the condensation can drain out.
Keep me posted on those arms...dropping them off personally would be great. Maybe you could swing over when we have one of our baseball games. They usually just turn in to a home run derby since we play on the Pony League diamond. It's hillarious because there's a weird animal zoo thing just behind left field. Mexican is pretty much the only one of us that can hit it over the 2nd fence. It's not uncommon to see Drunk Roger fetching the ball and running from crazy Alpacas while in flip flops with a beer in his hand! Ahh...good times...

I was wrong about your front clip being from a Lincoln...atleast not an older one. I'd say it would be information you'll need to know eventually. Can you give the guy you got it from a call? What if you need to replace balljoints, wheel bearings, steering components....?

Here's a lower a-arm from a 98 Lincoln.
http://i17.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/96/c3/d1a8_1.JPG
Actually it fits:
1995-2002 Crown Victoria
1995-2002 Grand Marquis
1995-2002 Lincoln & Town Car
I guess it doesn't really matter as long as the counter guy at the parts store is on his game...whatever they are, you can get pretty low with them. If you're not comfortable Z-ing your frame, you can Z the control arm. It's like installing spindles.

I'm really thinking about scrapping the clip all together. But finding a cheap replacement clip would probaly be more of a pain to find.
