What type of oil do you use, and what brand do you think is better?

Thats is sarcastic right? I am not sure, sorry don't know everyone on this site that well. But it refers to non-synthetic if its an actual question.

I use Valvoline high mileage in my old motor but in my new one I believe I will go with their High performance synthetic. Why we are on the topic of oil I have one quick question. Should I use any particular oil to break in my new engine? Or is it all up too personal choice?

Should I use any particular oil to break in my new engine? Or is it all up too personal choice? I would use cheap oil for cam break-in for sure, then go ahead and switch. Moly faced rings are pretty much seated by the time the engine starts. I use the same oil filter Sam does with fantastic results! I had good luck w/dino, but i've had better luck with synthetics. :D

Those of you who are using synthetic oil, what does it do for you? Is it higher gas mileage, more power or longer change intervals? It costs more so I would want to make sure of its advantages before switching to it. Thanks. :)
Kenny, you use that ultraguard gold filter too? Those things are awesome. I also just installed a filter magnet from filtermag.com. Traps any stray metallic particles.

I saw those filters in a magazine a couple of years back and decided it was for me. My local Amsoil rep was harshing on my Mobil 1 and when he found out I had run 10,000 mi with no oil or filter change he said he would test the sample. He said I would do better with his oil and filters, so he took the sample himself. Man was this dude pissed when the results came back in! He said this oil was a fresh change, and that I was a liar! So I punched him in his eye......Anyhow, I love those filters! I run them on racecars, boats, and anything else I can fit them on. I also still run Mobil 1, since getting Amsoil locally has become awkward.... :D

It costs more so I would want to make sure of its advantages before switching to it. Thanks. :)It does all of the above. I changed oil and diff lube in my 2k ZQ-8 3 door, it had 4.3/4L60/3.42 posi and I picked up 2 mpg average. I started with Royal purple engine oil but switched to Mobil 1 and used Mobil 1 in the rear. I picked up about 1/2 mpg per gas fillup, and it leveled off after about 4 fillups at 22mpg. If you use a really good filter, it actually comes out cheaper. I change both every 10k mi so it is easy to keep up with, my 93 has 208,000 miles and runs as good as ever. Beware; there are lots of so called synthetics that are dressed up crude. Another super good product is Moly additive(molybdenum disulfide) that you can get from Mr.Moly, this stuff burnishes into the metal pores and scratches. I can't begin to give you all the research thats been done on this, it only takes 1 treatment. DO NOT put moly in a clutch style posi rear or auto trans! I fully recommend the change over.

The reason for a synthetic motor oil is for easyer starting in winter conditions and a longer life of oil and the engine due to wear.

I never used syn oil in my nissan. I traded it in for my s10. It had 250,000 on it with no problems, leaks. That car has been in about 15 countries. I had it for 12 years. It was well worh the money. I did change it every 3,000, without fail!

Castrol. I have pulled motors apart with that kind of oil ran in it and seen no crusting or heat issues. I have 130K on mine and I have been running castrol in it. Engine is still clean! I run Syntec blend in the Pontiac GTP

Hey if mobil 1 is recomended for ALL GM performance models and others i think ill stick with it and i change it every 3K with a ACDelco filter, not because they are better more cause i work at a GM dealership and thats what i get my disscount on.

I use havoline, castrol, and mobile1 dino every 3000kms. Seems to work well and the oil always comes out similar to when I put it in, just a bit dirtier :P.
