If your motor mounts have been chewed through than it is most certainly time for a vacuum actuator inspection. Your problem is very common, so no, you have not been ripped off. Over time corrosion and old age of the seals prevents the actuator from holding the front differential locked in place when the t-case is engaged into 4HI or LO. Look into replacing this, or swapping the vacuum system out completely for a manual cable engagement made by PosiLock. It's a cable that you route from the differential housing to inside the cab. You pull the cable, lock in the axle shafts and now you have reliable front wheel power. It's either locked in, or unlocked, no questions asked.
The easiest way to replace the motor mounts in a 4x4 is to take off your front clip, core support, radiator and possibly the fan. Then lift up the motor with a cherry picker while someone with a small hand wrenches down on the new motor mounts. Two wheel drive S-trucks are quite a bit easier I've found because they don't have to work around the front differential or annoying front crossmember. If someone has a better way to replace these mounts on a 4x4, please let me know because it takes a lot of time to do these compared to a 2wd.
So that's it in a nutshell.

i had the same prob a while ago with the vaccum deal that rink is talking about so i ordered a new one and when i got ready to change it my original was workin again..so i put it on the shelf jus incase..but i can reach in and feel that vaccum actuator and it is ingaged but to me it still dont feel like the front end is pullin & you cant watch the front tires spin in the snow..so is there possibly something else to check Rink? sorry for jackin ur thread but i guess it might help you also..id still check the actuator though. should be under ur batt or right behind the batt on ur fender well..

You don't need a vacuum actuator with a solid front axle. :p

No...but you DO need a driveshaft to make it work! Sorry man...it's rare that I have an opportunity to jab you.

You can though the new solid axle full size trucks have electronic transfer cases that use one to engage and disengage in the cab. My question is can you put manual locking hubs on an IFS 4x4 setup if you wanted too?

I meant engage and disengage and from inside the cab...

My question is can you put manual locking hubs on an IFS 4x4 setup if you wanted too? Those are CAD axles and should be avoided. I assume you mean Dodges, Fords and various Jeeps. CAD axles with the center disconnect are weak and prone to bending at the seals with off-road use. They're not even good for a daily driver. The design isn't well though out, nor is the idea behind it.

Cad? Are you referring to IFS or SFA?
