Do you have the power to the distributor and coil hooked to a full time power source when the ignition key switch is in the start position and also in the run position of the key. We had this problem with a 1935 streetrod once. It was really hard to get started until we got the wiring switched. :)

when i hook up the wire used to activate the silenoid and crank it over the battery goes from 14 volts to 0. but if i hook that wire up to what used to be a wire for the fuel injection that has constant power it turns over awsome... this is boggling my mind????
