i have the exact same problem and what i did was take my coil packs off and cleaned them and hooked my ign. control mod. up to a tester and it said it was bad. got a new one and the problem was gone. the modual was about $160.00 but the problem was fixed. if you dont want to pay that much u can probably go to a junk yard and pick the coil packs along with it for like $75. hope this helps.

same problem with mine i thought it might have been clogged injectors but i guess before i flush them i might just go right to coilpacks

the smell of gas is the extra gas that is being sprayed in the cylinder that doesnt spark or not at the right time. Its hard to say with out runnig some tests but the coil packs are a good place to start. I have a 2.2L and recently did my plugs and wires. You have to get the misfirse thing taken care of other wise you will be buying a new cat.

had the same exact problem. I replaced both coils and it didn't fix it. Replaced the ignition control module and she runs great now.
