I have a 03 Reg swb 2.2L 5spd. My clutch just started to slip bad out of nowhere. I took it over to AAMCO shot to see if it was just the clutch or synco's. Just a burnt clutch they said.
AAMCO wants 277.48 for a Lucas clutch, 60.00 to resurface the flywheel, and 400.00 for labor.
AAMCO 737.48
Chevy Dealer 941.20 Labor Included.
I called AutoZone, they have a GM O.E.M Duralast Clutch Kit for 119.99 but it's for a 2002 4cyl. 2.2L, is their a difference in the manual tranny's from 2002 to 2003?????
I'm thinkin buying the AutoZone clutch, and finding a shop to do the labor. I'm in school, and don't have a garage or a lift, to do it myself. On a budget too.
Just curious from you guys, how much should the labor be ? How many hours u guys thing it would take the mechanic to drop the tranny and put up the new clutch ??
All advice is welcome. Thanx

well,
first of all, shops charge a markup on parts, thats part of how they make their money. usually they charge "list" which is like an MSRP for the parts.
usually a shop wont install a part that they didnt sell you. very rare to find one that will unless of course its an aftermarket/performance one. in which case they will add the $$ the ywould have made on the parts to the labor, if not a few bucks more. brand of clutch makes a difference in price too.
that sounds about right for labor, not having a flat rate manual in front of me.
if you have someone else do it(or do it yourself) make sure that the flywheel is resurfaced, also be sure the pilot and throwout bearings are replaced.
lastly when you get the new one in, stop beating on it ;)

I really didn't beat on it, a few burnouts here and their, I bought the truck new in 03 with 8 miles, as of today I have 63,300 miles on it.

When buying the clutch, do I need to also purchase a slave cylinder ? I see in some expensive kits, it is included....

ok being as though I think that it may be time for clutch number 3 for me heres is some advice from my own experience. Centerforce sucks. factory clutch did the best so far. however it seems as though i did not inspect/ replace all that was needed the last time and yet again i am having trouble. So as you said you are on a limited budget. Go to GM and buy EVERYTHING. Yes i know thats pricy but i promise that it will pay off in the end. this includeds...
-Clutch disk
-Pressure plate
-Throughout bearing
-slave cylinder
-Resurface flywheel (i forgot to)
-Clutch Resivor and hydralic line(not to important but why not)
Hope this helps and try to find a smaller mom and pop shop if you can. many of these shops do great work for a cheaper price. I am lucky and have access to a lift at a chevy dealership. Thank god for friends. good luck and screw it, beat the hellout of it. that is as long as you dont mind fixing it all the time. lol

My clutch went out at 33,000 miles. My brother drove it the first 28 (that bastard). A friend of mine's dad had a shop and charged me 550 for parts and labor. GM told me that it would be the exact same price as what you quoted (mid-900s). So far (82,000 miles) my clutch has ran well (knock on wood). I really don't do burnouts.. I'd rather get on it after I'm going. When I ride the clutch to burn out, you can really feel it crapping out your whole truck on a 4 cylinder. Good luck man, and do it the right way!

Still have one question to be answered, autozone and discount don't have a 2003 clutch kit, but i asked it they had a 2001 or 2002, 4cyl. clutch kit and they did.
I want to know if their is any difference in the transmission from a 01-03 4cyl. 5 speed s10. I don't think their is, but I don't want them to be working on my truck, and some part not match up. Thank for the help.

Call your Chevy dealer and ask if the part numbers are the same for the 2000-2003 trucks. That should tell you if they are the same part. :)
