I have a 2000 2.2 RWD S-10 with 176,000 miles. for the past year or two, when it gets down any where from 1/2 of gas to empty it will not start, and it isn't the fuel guage. Latley it has been around 1/4 of a tank. a couple weeks ago i got it to go as low as the low fuel coming on but now I am back to this problem. When i start it, i turn the key and let the fuel pump start pumping for about 5-10 seconds so that it gets pressure. Sometimes this works but latley nothing, maybe because it has gotten really cold latley. Origanaly we thought it was the starter. That has been changed several times but nothing. Fuel pump has been changed.. Nothing.. Gas tank has been dumped, everything cleaned out and for the most part, the truck has been very well taken care of. mostley highway miles. I bought the truck from my father who drove it to work and back about 60 miles each way. Any one know what this can be?

Have you checked the sender unit?

i had a buddy with a 2001 extreme that had the same problem after a year of having it. when his fuel got to about a 1/4 tank it would not start. took it in under warranty and it was the sending unit they replaced it and he has had no problem from there on. if i remeber right it was a bit pricey tho for the part.

It's my understanding that the fuel sending unit is the same as the fuel pump (the thing that sets in the gas tank). If that's true, it also has to do with when the gas gauge stops working and flips off and on and reads incorrectly. I got a price on one of those for around 270 (it was awhile ago). But I guess mine is still sending just fine, just gauging the gas incorrectly, because mine starts fairly fine.

If it's not what I think it is, then disregard that last statement ha!
