i have a 1999 2.2l sonoma 5 spd manual and its constantly getting 18-20mpg never better or worse...i am wondering if maybe something could be wrong with my motor since it seems to run fine and what mods are best for helping gas mileage?

an Electric Fan might help gas mileage. here's a list from S10Forum:
Electric Fan:
Flex-A-Lite "Black Magic" FLX-60
Taurus, Camaro, (many other E-fans also work well)
Universal Adjustable Thermostat for E-fan
Look into E-fan mod in this following link http://www.s10forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116754
new spark plug wires and spark plugs might help as well

i had the same probelm with my truck. even tho i gave it a tune-up it still wasnt that any better on gas. not much anyways.
far adding extra mods go, i had asked that in another forum. there really not much u can do. i mean u could sink $$ in it on parts like high peformance air filters, ect. but they don't make any big improvments that really worth spending cash on it. in my opinion.

He's pretty much correct. E-fan is just a pretty cheap mod considering you could get one at a car dump or something like that for cheap

Depending on your driving style and the driving conditions you usually encounter, you may or may not be able to get more. More info on those would lead to a more accurate answer as to whether the milage is low or about right.

it can get 18 sometimes but i usually get around 20, it just kind of bothers me that a 4 cylinder that doesnt have any speed what so ever would get that bad of gas mileage...my brother had a trans am slightly modified putting 360horses to the ground getting 26 mpg sometimes...

I've got a 98 2.2 5 speed w/ the following mods that possibly help MPG...
K&N FIPK
Magnaflow catalytic converter
Flowmaster 40 series muffler w/ turndown
MSD DIS ignition coils
Taylor 8mm plug wires
Flex-a-lite #60 e-fan
and I use the original-style AC Delco platinum plugs and Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 oil.
In the summer, I averaged about 32 mpg in mixed city/highway and on all highway, got about 34mpg. Now, with the weather being colder and letting my truck warm up for a minute or 2 in the mornings, I average about 28.

Cars almost always get better milage with bigger engines than trucks. However, 20 is a bit low but I did average 25mpg in my last car a 2.2 cavalier so its not much below the best you can really get without some performance milage improving mods.

my 2001 sonoma 4x4 4.3 only got about 11-14 mpg all the time (even when i 1st got it). even with cruise on. and i dont ride the brakes.
i gave it a tune up, new o2 sensor, realinement, tires balanced. oil stayed fresh, air cleaner didnt have no pre-mature wear on it. the comon things like that.. even passed the NY emissions test. but still got poor gas milage. i dont have the truck anymore..never did find out what was making it so hard on gas.

I helped my bro replace his coils, plugs, and wires yesterday before a little road trip he took today. His truck is a 2000 2.2 5 speed...and it was kind of missing and had a slight hesitation and he was getting about 22 mpg average before changing them...and about 24 on all highway. Come to find out, 2 of the 4 coil towers where the plugs go onto the coil packs were rusted bad. I guess thats what happens after 100k miles of the stock ignition parts.
Anyway...I ordered him the same stuff that I have on my truck...MSD coil packs, 8mm Taylor spiral-core wires, and some new stock platinums. Swapped those all out, the truck ran great, VERY smooth and no hesitation at all. He drove about 300 miles today and got just short of 31 mpg.
Almost 7mpg better...and a lot better than the 28mpg thats on the sticker when it was new. So I've now got 2 stories where these parts really work and make a huge difference. And the parts will pay for themselves in no time.

I have a 2.2 2000 extended cab with a cap, with 101,890 miles, automatic transmission and on the highway I get 27/28 (best once was 29.5),( city never checked it ??) I work 45 min. away so it's all highway miles and this is what it gets every week. I stay at 65/70 MPH. I try each tank full to better my mileage week by week, it's kinda turned into a game. I have not changed the fan yet over to electric (in the future) I only do one mod at a time and each change listed below helped every time. I started off getting only 20/21 MPG when I first purchased the truck 2 years ago
100% synthetic oil (Mobile One)
100% synthetic trans fluid (Royal Purple, with trans rebuild)
100% synthetic Rear end fluid (Mobile One with Pro Long Additive)
K&N Cold Air Intake System
Gibson stainless cat back single outlet (sounds good, not like a weed eater!)
Taylor wires 8mm
Plugs (I can't remember)
FUTURE MODS BELOW (Goal is to get 35 MPG Highway)
I will be repacking the front wheel bearings with Mobile One synthetic gear lube before my yearly trip to Florida for Speedweek. The easier it rolls with the least amount of friction makes a big difference.
High Flow Cat. Conv.
Header
Ported head (mostly in the exhaust area, clean entry points on intake side)
Transmission cooler
Electric fan
Does anyone know of a aftermarket camshaft made for these motors if so I am looking for a mileage/ RV type of cam, also who makes hard core performance parts for this motor (not bolt on stuff) like pistons, cranks ect. I am used to building Big V8's so this motor is new to me.

The factory specs for for a 2001' 2.2l is 19mpg city and 25mpg highway. so dont expect too much. 21-23mpg mix driving.

My old 4cyl 5sp got around 18mpg no matter how I drove it, whether it was city or highway, I noticed I had extra $$$$ laying around after I got the v6....I was getting 25+mpg mixed and 19 city.....lol

lately I've been getting *around* 25mpg. Notice I'm stressing *around*. Right now in the middle of winter I have 210lbs of sand in the back, otherwise my gas mileage would be 0mpg *lol*. Best I've ever calculated was 27mpg.
I did install an e-fan, and the engine seems to run smoother. Everything else is stock.
2000 2.2L 5spd.
68K miles
Cowl induction hood (hmmm maybe this added some weight??)
BATs installed (my abbreviation for "BIG @$$ TIREs" (this probably doesn't help either :))

I think some S-10s are doomed for BAD gas mileage and I have one. I can drive on the highway like an old man at 60-65 MPH and be lucky to get 23 MPG. I have a 97 2.2, ext cab w/5sp that's EPA rated for 30 MPG Hwy!!!!
I've done all the easy mods except e-fan, which I don't honestly think will help much. It has a clutch fan and can't take more tham 1/8 HP for just spinning, which is what is does almost ALL THE TIME. Even when it's engaged, it can't take more than 1/2 HP and I've never seen it engaged, even in dead of summer w-A/C on.
I puy on a K&N CAI, flowmaster 50, computer chip (no - not a Jet) and did ALL the tuneup shit. I've got a new Catco cat and Oxygen sensors that are going in soon.
What will probably help the most is replacing that rediculous 4.10 axle with 3.42's, which should be here in about a week.

You'd be surprised. Its been dyno-tested to rob about 5-7 hp from a little 2.2...considering its only got 120 at the flywheel, thats pretty significant. I got about 2-3 mpg better after installing an e-fan, and there are plenty of others on here that can vouch for similar numbers.

You guys can't complain at all.I'm currently only getting like 14/15 mpg city and only 200-225 miles highway on full tank on my 99 2.2 dime  EVEN after new A/C Delco platinum plugs, wires and coil.
But my truck does have a 4:10 rear and a bad flex pipe that's making my SES light come on saying I have a bad o2 sensor.
The main reason I got this truck was to save on gas  My old LT1 95 Caprice cop car got 27 mpg highway.

My s10 blazer gets 15/16 mpg mixed. These trucks will not get much better but a 2.2 s10 pick up should be getting better milage than what my 4.3 gets, because the s10 pickups are ~500lbs lighter and half the engine.

Ok, I know it IS illegal to disconnect and bypass the cat conv. with a pipe but has anyone done it? I did it on my 4.3 in a mini van and it helped my mileage ALOT!! how about on the S10 2.2, AGAIN, I KNOW IT'S ILLEGAL :D ...but has anyone done it? We don't have Echecks here. I just want to know what I asked, I don't want to get into a heated debate. Thanks.

Last summer I made a trip to denver and back on a 1/4 of a tank.(its 180 miles round trip) I got about 33 mpg. on average I get about 17-20mpg in the city.
PS I have a 4.3l with a 5speed. the only mods I have done include intake, jet chip, flowmaster exhaust, Msd ignition, 8.5mm bosch plug wires.

Thats totally possible. My dad has told me how he went from Billings, MT to Denver on 3/4 of a tank in his '67 SS Chevelle 396 with a 25 mph tail wind. I just asked him and he told me it had a 20 gallon tank and its about 450 miles...so thats right at 30 mpg in a car w/ 300hp on a bad day :)
i just completed my long awaited full tank milage tests on my 01 sonoma extended cab 4 cyl 5 speed, all stock, nothing in the bed, no bed cover.
21.8 MPG in town all trips less than 10 miles;
23.6 MPG mixed in town and several 50 mile plus trips; and
28.5 MPG all interstate free flowing traffic in the Appalachia foot hills.

I get 375-425 miles per tank in my 00 ext cab 2.2. I was getting a lot less, but I changed my fuel filter and pump, ran some injector cleaner and bought a tonnaeu cover. I also had a slight vibration due to my 3/4 drop that I couldn't work out until I got the JTR kit. after I installed it, I noticed better acceration and my gas milage went up a bit and the vibration was gone. Fat tires and low tire pressure can also hut your gas milage.

I consistently get 29-30 in mixed city/freeway driving. Always drive 80-85 on the freeway.

I'm getting about 27-28 mpg highway. Try changing your fuel filter if you have not changed it before.
