My grandfather did a swap on my cousins S10, dont knwo they year, but he put a 305 in it and said he was able to reuse the stock drive shaft. I am planning on doing a swap this summer, once school lets out, and it would be great if i could use the stock drive shaft. Anyone know if it'll work on my 1996 2.2L?

Depends on the trans you use and exactly where in the frame you mount the engine/trans. There is some adjustment on some mount systems. Often the driveshaft is 1/2-5/8 inch too long. Stealth makes an axle set-back plate set that is much cheaper than a new driveshaft.

you can reuse the stock driveshaft if you have a transmission with the short tail on it

depends on the transmission u will go with. sence right now u say u got a 2.2, 4 cyl. those stock trannys wont bolt up to a v8. the trannys off a 4.3 will bolt up to a v8 i beleive. i might be mistaken. just do all measurements b4 u go swaping it all to make sure.

bud useing ur stock driveshaft will either warp the shaft or bust the ujoints in it ,

i tottaly wouldnt do it ,

my bud swap a transmission once an his old one was 2 long also so he got a custom drive shaft made , 240 bucks later it doesnt cost that much unless its like carbon fiber or aluminum

The stock driveshaft is good enough for a 305. In fact, the stock driveshaft is good enough for a 454 until you make enough mods to get traction. You'd pretty much have to fit slicks in the stock wheel well to get enough traction for the driveshaft to be a problem. You'll also need a stronger axle--the driveshaft is much more capable than the stock rear axle.

However, old U-joints can be a problem. I always replace the U-joints when the driveshaft is out for the swap. It's cheap insurance.

The difference between a 2.2 driveshaft and a 4.3 driveshaft is
