Hey guys (and gals)

I have a 96 S10 with a 2.2 4cyl and an auto trans. The last 2 months during driving it would quit running at a stoplight or just idleing in the driveway. The gauges start to freak out jumping all over and then it dies. It won't start after that and I usally have to clear the ECM (battery cable off) for awhile. I thought it might just need a tune up so I changed wires and plugs. It started and ran for 2 min. then the gauges started jumping around and then it died...no start after that.

Things I've done so far....

Checked fuel pump, I can hear it charge up when I turn the key on.
Checked all grounds along frame (ground to clean metal, reconnect)
Checked all clips on TPS,CPS, battery.
Replaced with new wires and plugs.

What would be my next move?? I have a fuel filter for it but have not changed it yet. Could it be coil packs...it sure runs nice the first few mins.?
Anyone think it might be the Crank Position Sensor?? Would that make it run for a few mins. and then drop out?? Could it be the Throttle Position Sensor??

Or God-forbid the ECM is flakey. Yikes!!

Someone has had this same problem....I read about it constantly all over the net. It never seems to be solved...anywhere...?
If anyone can help or at least set me in the right direction.... a thousand thank you's will be stowed upon you..!!

Thanks for all help...

run a ground wire from the battery to the frame i had the same problem and the frame wasant grounded making the fuel pump run weekley and when i hit the brakes it woul dshut off and all guages go crazy then i would disconnect battery also and it would be fine so just get a thick wire and a battery clamp thing and run it to the frame

I ran a new wire from the Negative post to the frame and it ran for 40sec.....sigh*

Then it died and won't start until I reset the ECM. When I try to restart it feels like it's out of time...it lopes along and fights againt it's self to restart, like it's out of time. Reseting the ECM will make it start up again for about a min.

Could this be the crank position sensor?? Or am I just on the wrong track??

Any help would be great...thanks

It really could be anything
I would have it put on a computer to see what codes come up

Normally when an engine runs like that it, in the past i found out that it was something very simple. Like ground cable, ill also look at the vacuum lines and sensors. Exactly which gauge is jumpy. if its the battery than its electrical. if its the rpm id check the fuel system. if is getting too much fuel or not enough. whens the last time you changed your fuel filter. You should also invest in a diagnostic tool. its pricey but could save you a bundle in the long run. it did for me

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I have to agree with Beckner...this stuff is hard to pinpoint to just one thing. I have a fuel filter and I'll change that out tonight and report back.
I will try any and all ideas :)

Thanks again

Yes I did ...I checked everything that I could think of. I was exhausted after 2 months of getting nowhere. I had it towed to shop and had them take a look at it. It turns out that the ignition module (sp?) was bad. It causes flakey gauges (jumping around) and shuts the truck down after about 30secs. It's in the steering wheel underneath. It's a black box that has a few wires comming from it and a clip that clips into the ignition. Price was about $100 for the box and $98 for labor. Well worth it after searching for everything.

Hope this helps....
