I have an 01 S10, 4 Cyl 5 Speed with AC, and I've run into a road block trying to change the fan clutch, which failed in the engaged position yesterday :( I've gotten the intake hose and fan shroud off without a hitch, but I'm trying to losen that big nut that holds the fan assembly to the water pump, and I can't get the water pump to stop turning with it. The only thing I could think of, which isn't working, was to put an 12mm wrench on one of the bolt heads on the water pump and turn it the opposite direction of the wrench that I have on the big nut, but all that is doing is tightening the bolt head that I have the 12mm wrench on. I have to get this thing changed quickly, please, any help on how to keep the water pump from turning would be greatly appreciated

Thats not the water pump the fan is connected to. The water pump is on the side of the motor next to the power steering. I got mine off by wedging a LOOONG screw driver between two of the 4 bolt on the pulley that the clutch is bolted to. Lock the screw driver and use a REALLY big crescent or i used a set of channel locks to get the fan off. Best done if you have a friend to hold the screw driver and WEAR GLOVES!!! i've definately had my share of skin removed from my hands by the blades as they spin when getting the fan off. Hope that helps ya.

Spray penetating lube al over the big nut, then let it sit for a little while. I used a wrench and held the water pump pulley bolt head like you are doing and it worked after I used penetrant. I also tried to get one off another truck the same way and never could. I had to work around it to install an alternator. Those things are a pain in the ass.

Try tapping on the wrench when loosening it with a hammer. It should help, thats how i did mine.

The fan's on the crank, so put it on the ground, put the thing in gear, and hit the e-brake. Let the car do the work for ya.

Hammer and punch, it's right hand thread.

Mine wasn't right hand thread. The fan isn't on the crank either, it's on the water pump. You'll spin the water pump pulley (belt slipping) even if it's in gear and the brake's on.

Do you know any one with an impact wrench and an air compressor?

Impact wrench won't help.

I even knew that an impact wrench won't work, because it's right between the fan assembly and the pullley, so there's no way to get a socket on it.

if you cant hold the pulley still with a prybar like mentioned earlier, you can try welding a small bead onto the the nut. that will allow you to put a impact hammer on and the intial blow should be enough to knock it loose. this worked for me once on a ford but iv never had a problem with the s-10s or any oher chevy for that matter.

I just installed my E-fan today...so I learned how to get the clutch fan off. I went to Autozone and borrowed their 5-piece clutch fan tool kit thing and one of the pieces fits over the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley and has a square-shaped hole in it so you can put a 1/2" ratchet in there and hold it still. Now, with a friend holding it still (I held it from underneath, while my brother turned it), this allows for you put any kind of big wrench...pipe wrench, monkey wrench, anything that'll fit on there...and turn that big nut.

You probably won't be able to just turn it and get it loose....so what we did was did the "ghetto impact wrench" where you beat it with a hammer. Worked great...a couple hits and it was off.

I heard that some trucks have reverse-threads...but they weren't on my truck.

The old clutch is bad so you take and impact chisel with the flat chisel in it place it on the edge of the big nut and it will spin it right off. That’s how I did mine no spray an if I remember right it loosens to the left you will know in about 5sec.

Here a pic if your not sure what a impact chisel is

The fan is not attached to the crank
