My '89 4x4 Reg cab 4.3 lliter auto tranny with 145,000+ miles on it:
I'm not sure how it's supposed to work; but, mine seems to hang in
2nd until the speed drops below 15mph, and only drops to first around
9 to 7mph. Then, back the other way is the same on accel after a stop.
What the hell --it works! :)

I have a 94 with the 4L60E tranny and it usually stays in 2nd gear as you slow down untill you are at around 10mph or less. You do not need 1st gear if you are going faster than 10mph unless you want to takeoff. If that is the case just floor it and it will down shift. If you are running from a roll and want it to stay in 1st then just put it in 1.
