I have a 1st Gen...I was talking with my bro. and just visualizing different things for my truck...and the thought of taking a piece of sheet metal and "connecting" the bed to the cab to make one seemless piece of s10.
Let the Flaming begin!

It won't hold up because the bed twists and rocks as you go over bumps and it does so differently than the twists and rock of the cab so connecting the two will cause a lot of stress on the body and would probably bend whatever you try to weld in there. Good thinking though, There have been others who have asked the same question a while back. It's been done, but the truck was a trailer queen I believe.

you mean make it uni-body? I've seen that a few times....Like this truck http://www.minitruckinweb.com/features/toyota/0310mt_94toyota/index.html

You're right, 97zq8 didn't think of that AND apparently I didn't think too much about the usage of seem and seam. Kind of like the difference between "their" and "there" one showing possesion the other not. Kind of weird having Kermit the frog give you an english lesson. ;)

i know we all need an english lesson but we dont want one. make some truck post man, not stupid sh*t.
Thank You brant. I agree. We come here to talk, not get schooled. I try hard to spell everything correctly and use good grammar, but sometimes stuff happens.

it can be done (the body mod) but you have to weld in supports out the wazoo to stiffent it. then sheet metal just to cover it...remember sheetmetal really isnt a structural thing...its gotta have a frame basicaly ...but it can be done...lotta work though
anything can be done, if you are willing to put the effort in to it.
If you real want to you could mod a Muria front end onto your truck.

Ive done that with an 88 S10 -...bad!!! After 3 months the uni body s10- looked like a cruched coke can. I took the sheet metal off and had a really scratched up paint job, so, to all you who try this mod, you first must attach steel from the cab to the bed and then reinforce the whole frame so it moves as one...its not fun, but it does looke really nice-I have pictures but not digital, I will try to get them scanned so I can post them

it would seem that the seamless look would be prone to "torquing" when you drive around and therefore might crack...no? i guess if its not your daily driver it would be cool. but hit my friend here in the apartment did it to his silverado...and its starting to show signs of crackage...if you will...

You would need to start with the truck frame and strengthen it to the point it will not flex. Once this is done so it will not tear up your work, the look is very nice like a modern Elcamino. Sounds like a cool project and very unique look. :)

i'd figure part of the problem would be that the bed is solidly mounted, while the cab is mounted on rubber bushings... thats the movement/flex, NOT the frame

The front half of the frame is boxed from the factory but the back half behind the cab is not boxed. When you take the bed off a truck, you can grab hold of the rear frame rail and actually lift it up. That's called frame flex that has to be eliminated before doing a unibody mod. If you look under an older El camino you will see that the frame was boxed to the rear bumper.

its not gonna be a unibody it just wont be removeable
its a good idea if you gonna throw a topper on an makeing it a long door less blazer
i think that is stupid your correcting on him on a word that sounds the same an prolly was never written in high school in an sa .
you get a cookie for finding the mistake
you get another one for not even talking bout the bed idea

I've always wanted to do this
You could box the frame in the rear and then try to make some bracket just like the cab mounts and use some of the cab bushings so the bed and cab would move together
Just a thought lol

You know whats easier? Buy a blazer and chop the back make it into a truck bed and bamm youve already got your unibody just have to make a new back window same a a truck. Thats easier that trying to make it from a truck I think  2 door blazer would be easiest
???bags???
09-29-2005, 06:23 PM
it would be easier with a truck to start just get some sheet metal cut it to fit and weld it into the gap between the cab and bed bam unibody. easier said than done but easier than cutting up a perfectly good blazer and fabing on a cab

Your missing what everyone is saying bags....You'll need to do some serious reinforcing of the frame so it doesn't flex and crack between the cab and the bed. Read through the rest of the thread and you'll see what we're talking about.

Brian K. Shut the hell up and just respond to the topic....
ANYWAY: I think it would flex too much. thats prob. why they didnt join them in the first place, not being a smart ass

i think boxing the frame would help a lot but like bill said the rubber mounts would still be a problem. i dont think you would ever get that thing solid enough so the bed wont "rack" on you and crack/rip apart. someone mentioned it before but if its not going to be a daily driver it might survive for a while. just thinking out loud again.

that freaking bed wont move is st8 bolted up to the frame an the cab doesnt move unless its body mounts are shot
unless ur flexing the frame you wont have to worry bout it buckeling
if your serouis then shave everything , do this , do a 3 inch chop on the top ,
but some dubs an bags on it or balls an meats

bonecrushin.....if youdon't think the bed moves then i'm sorry to say your a *&^%$#.....THE BED FLEXES all the time. the frame twists and buckles every time you turn or go down even a little hill. My shaved tailgate has stress cracks on the welds because we didn't make a strong enough frame in the skin to support the bed when it twists. try putting a jack under the frame on the driver side of the bed and lift it up. youll SEE the flex it goes through. Trucks can be made unibody but you need reinforce the hell out of the bad and cab. I've seen people actually move the cab and the bed closer together and bolt/weld them together plus build gussets and brackets to reinforce them.
Try sitting in the back of a truck and have someone slam on the brakes with your fingers in between the cab and the bed. That'll make you a believer that the bed DOES MOVE!
