I just got a used trans for my 97 2.2L 5 speed. The manual I have says to use GM Syncromesh w/ friction additive, or something like that. The local dealer doesn't have any, & won't order just 3 quarts. Went to local Car Quest store, that guy says regular 80w-90 will be fine. I don't want to have to pull another trans. out cuz this one was kinda a PITA. Anyone know if regular gear oil is ok?

Use the synchromesh. It's synthetic with some type of friction modifier. Slippery as hell.
If you use regular gear oil it wont shift as smooth. Not sure if it would cause any damage. But hell, aint worth taking the chance on a tranny.

gear oil will be just fine .... takes a little more time to actually heat up but won't hurt the trans. Also I've heard you can use the oils like mentioned but I've always used the gear oil in every standard/manual trans personal pref since I know cars .... somewhat well.

I use Royal Purple Synchromax for the NV1500 5 speed manual transmission in my 99 dime. It will take 2.65 quarts. Works great
