Well, I ran into a problem with my swap. I'm converting a 95 Sonoma 4x4 4.3L TBI with a 4L60e tranny to a 400 small block with a carb. My truck has push button 4x4 engage. Does that mean that the transfer case needs the computer? I was hoping to ditch my computer. Does that also mean that there is NO way I can convert my tranny to shift mechanically instead of electronically? (I mean without purchasing a stand alone unit to control the tranny). My knowledge of transmissions is very limited, but I read up on a way to do this. A guy on some other forums says he did it, using a 4L60e. I'm wondering if it can be done with my tranny as well. Please take a look at the method....

Hey,
All the other posts talk about buying just a hook up for it. I did all mine, by myself. Took less that 30 min, and it locks up to my plesure(well, its automatic lock up, but you can easily wire it to a switch). A quick overview is you use a single-pin connecter from a TH 400(the piece that screws into the tranny, the 700R4 has a 4 pin), cut 3 wires in the tranny pan, install a
brake cancel switch, and in my case install a low vacuum switch for automatic lockup, or in your case, a manual switch. If you want the whole story on how i did it, just e-mail me at fathead_03@hotmail.com

have fun, i had a FI engine, made it carb, have a 4L60E tranny (electronic lockup torque converter 700R4). We just cut i think 3 wires, hooked one back up, changed the 4 pin from 700r4 to a single pin from a th400 tranny, installed a low vacuum switch, and a brake cancel switch, and it works like a charm. IM me if you would like to know the exact wires, and parts you need.

I guess my question is, can I do this....and keep using my 4l60e tranny, and still use the same transfer case, and retain my push button 4x4 engage???

The "E" in 4L60E stands for electronic. You cannot run a 4L60E without a computer of some sort (either the factory PCM or and aftermarket controller). I'm not sure how the transfer case works (little knowledge on 4X4).

aint no kick down cable on the 4l60e , uses a thorttle position sensor an yes it uses the pcm

So do you think that this guy didn't really have a 4L60e? Maybe he had a 700r4 which shifted manually, except for overdrive which was electronically engaged. In other words....not a 4L60e.

Ok, lets say that I had to get a different tranny, possibly a 700r4, would I be able to keep my push button 4x4 engage? Anyone know about this?

He probably had a 4L60, which is a 700R4. I'm not sure how your transfer case works, but you can replace your 4L60E with a 700R4, you just have to get all the necessary pieces and hardware.

to use the 4L60E with a carburated engine you have two options:
1. use the factory ECM
2. use an aftermarket controller for the 4L60E, like the one offered by TCI which is great but costs about $700
If no ECM is used the tranny WILL NOT SHIFT and possibly remain in 3rd gear all the time.

the 4l60/e can be one of two versions early was with the kickdown cable 99 or so and some were drive by wire which was fully electronic.my 99 silverado has the cable kickdown but has a 4l60.its just the replacement for the 700r4 so if its the e version you do need the comp to run it if its mechanical well you should be able to make it work

Ok, so I'll track down a 700r4. Now my next concern is the transfer case. Does the push button engage need a computer to operate? Will I need to get manual shift transfer case?

...my 99 silverado has the cable kickdown but has a 4l60...

Not from the factory it doesn't. The 4L60 was replaced by the 4L60E in '94 or so. A '99 will have a 4L60E.

Anyone know about the transfer case issue I have? Will I be able to retain my push button engage, or will I need to switch to manual shift engage?

Its tied in to the ECM I am pretty positive.

Wouldn't that tie into the PCM instead of the ECM?

I guess I'm going to ditch the carburetor idea, and just stick with TBI. Thanks anyways guys.
