i want to paint the vents and around where the sterio and heater is in my truck. i was going to get it done at a autobody shope but somebody told me that if it's just for the inside of the truck to go get some model car paint(like spay paint only for model car) and paint it myself. would it work?

you don't have to sand unless you want it smooth...i wanted mine to have texture, so i degreased it with rubbing alcohol and used krylon fusion black. until my truck was broken into the 3 year finish remained unscratched and glossy black. but i fixed what was damaged and even painted the airbag section. looks amazing....you can do it in your own garage...

Alright man here ya go I have done mine and many of my friends dashes and other plastic pieces:
For a Smooth finish:
- Sand with at least 800 grit
The higher the grit sandpaper the smoother the surface
- Clean the area with rubbing alcohol, degreaser soap, or whatever will take of the dust, dirt, hand oil, dash cleaner, ect.
- Prime
Make sure to use about 2-3 thin coats
Wet sand between coats with 1000 grit for a really smooth finish.
- Paint Color
Make sure to use about 2-3 thin coats
Wet sand between coats with 1000 grit for a really smooth finish.
- Clear Coat
Make sure to use about 2-3 thin coats
Wet sand between coats with 1000 grit for a really smooth finish.
For a Textured finish:
- Clean the area with rubbing alcohol, degreaser soap, or whatever will take of the dust, dirt, hand oil, dash cleaner, ect.
- Prime
Make sure to use about 2-3 thin coats
Wet sand between coats with 1000 grit for a really smooth finish.
- Paint Color
Make sure to use about 2-3 thin coats
Wet sand between coats with 1000 grit for a really smooth finish.
- Clear Coat
Make sure to use about 2-3 thin coats
Wet sand between coats with 1000 grit for a really smooth finish.
Make sure to take your time. Let each coat of paint dry between coats. If you reapply to soon you can get runs or bubbleing. Then you have to sand and start over. That will really piss you off. I have my whole dash and plasics paited and they shine like no other, but it took a full weekend and alot of beer for the down time. Hope all goes well and post pics when you are done.

Do you have any pictures of the work you do? maybe kind of close, in the light/out of the light. I don't want to see the whole interior, but kind of close to get what it looks like.

where can i get the plastic primer at ?

on plasic if you dont want a glossy finish you can use vinly dye

dont forget bout the tempture its gotta be around 65 -75 for it to stick right

i would hang it upside down from the screw mounts on coat hangers

an let a 3-5 hour of time happen before each coat it will be tough wont chip or flake then

I used a GM color match paint from Auto Zone.
I just cleaned the dash and painted it.
I used two coats and it has worked for 2 years with no fading.
It's an easy custom job that anybody can do.

What kind of primer is best for the plastic and how da hell do you remove the A/C vent on the far right of the dash? How can I color my steering wheel black- get it recovered? I almost started doing this today but wanted to ask a few questions here first. Hey, JROD, you got pics or at least a pic of the painted airbag?

i would highly recomend removing the whole dash to paint it. i just changed my heater core so i took everything out and covered my dash in this weird rubbery leather/vinyl stuff and painted the platic with the fusion paint after cleaning everything with alcohol.

Just don't paint the soft areas of the dash because it will peal and look like crap!!!

Seems as though the digital camera is on backorder. As soon as it gets here I will upload pics of the dash, and the newly tweeded sun visors. Heres a question. has anyone recovered their door panals? All those curves kinda worry me.
