i noticed about 10 minutes ago that my blazer is leaking oil. i got the oil changed about a week ago and haven't noticed until now. it may have been leaking ever since. which leads me to believe that the drain plug isn't tightened all the way. i don't know exactly where the drain plug is, i am not the most talented when it comes to engine work.
i looked under my blazer and it looks as if it is leaking from a silver thing with what looks like a heat sink on the underside of it facing the ground. the bolt heads face the rear of the vehicle. it is located even with the back of the front tires, in front of the crossover pipe.
next week i will have to drive home (i am in fort worth because of hurricane rita), which will be about a 5 hour ride, so i want to get that fixed before i have to drive home. if needed i can get a picture tomorrow, unless someone knows for sure what it is.
on the new 4.3's, the plug is on the driver's side of the oil pan pointing out toward the wheel. It's also just under the oil filter and a little toward the front of the truck. You really can't miss it, 'cause it's at the bottom of the pan and it's the only plug there. Just make sure it's tight, but not too tight, or you could strip the fragile aluminum pan. It should be a 15mm head on the plug. That's probably the problem. Sometimes mechanics will hand tighten the plug and forget to torque it. Just get under the truck and tighten it with a ratchet&socket or a wrench. Easy fix if it's leaking there.

I had a similar prob with another vehicle of mine. The prob could also be the oil filter ( which was my prob ) Some ass----- didn't tighten it enough, and I had a bad oil spot in my garage. My wife drove the van to work the next day and there was a major oil trail all the way to her work. The guy that did the oil change came out and redid the oil change on the spot. Then three days later oil was spotting in my garage again, I took the van back to the oil change place and they redid the oil change for the 3rd time. I was right under the car this time watching him do his work. I found the reason the oil filters were not working correctly, it was because he had tightened the filter too much, and was crimping the rubber ring in the filter.
Long story short.
NEVER trust them sob's--- I always will check afterwards, now that I have gone thru this.. "Whew" I feel better now, no more anger issues.

There is also a small gasket on the oil drain plug that may be gone or bad. If the plug is already tight, then get a new drain plug gasket. It is easy to cut the gasket on the oil pan when over tightening at most lube centers. You could always take it back to the lube center and tell them it is now leaking after they worked on it. :)
This is why you should always change your own oil. You can have it done for around $20-25 I guess ( I never have) OR you can buy the best oil and the best filter for around the same price and do it yourself. This results in a better oil change, better oil, better filter, and peace of mind. Plus you can do it whenver the hell you want to, and you don't have to work around their business hours. I see no reason to have it done at a shop. Why wouldn't you do your own???

He had already stated he didn't really know anything about engines or even where the oil drain plug was located. If that is the case, it would be better to have a professional do it. The key is to make sure it is a competent professional.
Ideall would be to learn how to do it himself saving money. :D

The best thing i did was learn how to change my own oil. Like 67 truckin said, for the same price as a shop you can get the best oil and filter by doing it yourself. For me, I can get at least 2 oil changes by doing it myself for the same price of having it done at a shop. :-)
