Ya I spend 20 hours wet sanding and polishing those rims and I still have to paint them. but I got a good deal. Should I paint the inserts black or the original color

If you don't want to spend the time painting them I'd leave them the way they are! They look really good!

I definitely envy you. I wish I had something else to drive so that I could strip my whole truck down like that. I think I would powerdercoat EVERY part and put it back on. Good luck. I love it when you take something apart... make it look like new, and put it back on. In the words of Will Ferrell... "Glooooorious".

*powd*ercoat, that is. sorry i can't edit.
No posi I have the stock 308 gears for now Pretty bad when I haven't even driven the truck and I've had it for a year
curently I don't own another car because in canada you can only get your g1 lisence at 16. You need have your g1 for 9 months before you can drive by yourself. So I just got my g1 in march so I cant drive by myself anyways. Yah it also helpes to have a dad who knows what he's doing. So I do most of the work myself and my dad helps me with the rest.
I should have taken a pic of the rims when I got then because they looked so back compared to now. That was a lot of wet sanding and polishing
Thank for the comments Ryan :)

started my project 3 years ago when i worked in a big shop and they let me keep it inside. now i have switched jobs and have her up for sale. i spent alot of time planning and working on her to get her this far. one day i will have a shop/garage to work in.
Some progress I got the cab off the truck removed the power steering pump, master cylinder, most of the brake lines, all the fuel lines and fuel tank. I bringing the truck to get sandblasted this week. It will be a lot easier to pay someone to do it. Then me using the wire wheel. Plus they get the hole frame clean and primed for me to paint.
Any sugestion on what type of paint to use.

POR-15 us the best frame paint there is. So I've heard. Never used it myself though.

04-22-2007, 06:44 PM
I used POR-15 on my frame, but it is designed to go down on bare metal though, dont know how good it would work on a frame that has already has primer on it.

why use a paint......Id look around and see if you can get some herculiner type of stuff without the granules in it and seal it with that!

That's basically what POR-15 is, it will not chip and nothing seems to really stick to it.

There's the bare frame I don't have to get the frame primed so I will look into the por-15 thanks for all the help. The 350 is ready But the frame isn't. The tranny needs a rebuilt but "Rome wasn't built in a day" as my dad would say.

I remember long ago when my frame looked like that!
Well the frame is still at the sandblaster so I figured I would get ahead on the cab. two years ago I paid a exhaust shop to replace my floor pan. So they put the new pant over top without cutting the old pan out  . So now I have to trailer the cab to work to cut the old ones out. So I moved one step foward and two steps backwards. Hopping to have the truck together for the end of July so i will have a month of cruising before I take it apart to put wood in the bed, paint and rebuild the tranny.
Will have pic in the middle of the week

The cab sounds like fun! Hehehe!
The cab sounds like fun! Hehehe!
The cab sucks. Just to move it I need 4 people to be there. I have to borow my uncles trailer. So now I have to detaile his truck. All this because of the exhaust shop. I was hoping to get the tranny tunel and fire wall painted this weekend but thats never going to happen. All I know is if you want it done right do it yourself.

Well today went a lot smother. Got home from work borowed a friends air compresser and cut the old floor out and filled the cracks with seem sealer. Got the firewall almost ready for paint. I will try to get some pictures up tomorow.

looks real good . Dosent seem to have much rust pitting , mine has a lot of it due to the undercoating it had ( poor job ) . Question for yea , what is the measurment from the front leaf spring bolt to the front of the rear housing ? I lost all me measurments . yeay :frustrate
Yeah the frames is pitted but the undercoating makes it look great from far back. I'm happpy with the frame. Now it's time to reassemble :D
Badtoad454 you have a pm
And Beckner your frame still looks better. I think the salt toke a toll on my frame It's just not as noticeable as before.

Got a great deal on the headers from a performance shop owner who was building a blazer for his son. They changed there mind and are building a 66 chevy wagon. So he sold me the header for 100$ used and the mounts for 80$. That's in canadian funds too.

Weird. I had a buddy build a stockfloor bodydroped 1st gen with long tube headers (350) and he had no problems with ground clearence. Well if he layed it out in the grass it would form the shape of the exhaust.
Well I had to cut grass so I only got the intake bolted on to the heads. Still have to go get masking tape. To lazy to do anything today :)

Well I'm trying to get it driveable for the last month of summer because I don't pay insurance with a beginer. It will be cheaper under my dad's name. So I will take the trans out in the winter and probably prep the body for paint then
Well I got the 350 in with the 700r4 this weekend, I spent most of the day cleaning the garage and putting the 327 back together. Here are a few pics

I ran into a little problem my short water pump from the 327 is so short it is hitting my timing cover so I guess I will just run a long water pump. I got the rochester carb today so when we get the motor running I can test if I like the carb or not. It's only 25$ anyways. Its a start.

I Was going to windsor weekend (drag racing event in Grand bend) in the morning but they needed me to wash cars. So my boss promised me as a joke the 08 corvette to go there in. I worked late tonight and I needed a truck to bring my tools home so I told him about the corvette he promised me and he let me take any other car home so grabed the new 2007 duramax diesel to take home. Since I only have my beginers I drove it with my dad. That is one awesome truck. :

Sorry for crappy pics its dark outsidelol. This is the truck I drove in the parade in my town with a car trailor on the back with a cobalt super charged on the trailer. UPDATE :D I love thanks giving. (long weekend) Well I have a lot of work to do on my truck before it is streetable. However, Me and my dad ran all the tranny lines fuels lines. Tonight I installed the rad hoses to. So we are planning on running the motor this weekend. Can't move it thought because we have the driveshaft out to change the u joints carrier bearing and get the drive shaft shortened. Oh and I have no electric fans yet.
In a few week we are going over to detroit speed shop to buy the shifter and probably flowmaster 50 mufflers and cutouts. :D Have to keep the truck quiet because of the new "stunt" driving law in ontario (I guess you can have your car impounded for a week and a big fine if a cop suspects you have being doing burnouts, wheelie's ex. So I am getting the flowmaster 50's to keep the noise level down when i'm in the city. Keep the truck a sleeper. :D
Update to come with pictures. no video because my camera that had video and sound broke.

Well its starts but doesn't idle as of yet.
Well i was out working on my truck my neighboor (spelling) down the street came by in his 69 Camaro. He asked if I wanted to take it for a ride to get some inspiration lol. We went around the town in it but god when yah step on it it goes. Nothing like a 427 open header in the morning. When he left the house he left two very wide burnout marks. :D I think I need to tub the truck.

Fantastic...That's great to hear!!!
So we can't get the truck to idle because it's running to lean so where going to talk to the engine builder to see if he can look at the carb. Probably won't try to start the truck for a few weeks. (mom doesn't like the open header a lot.) :D
people down the street where having a party so i'm sure they like me now

Get rid of the decals and blackout the windows and I'd daily drive that beast!!
Well progress and no camera to post a vid of it running. We found all our vacum leaks. Truck will only idle a 1500rpm. Where going to probably just buy a new carb. Still working on getting the bodylines fixed. I also buying my electric fans this week so we can run it longer without having to stop because the motor is getting warm. I really need a camera to get vid up here

That sucks about the carb but your almost there!
If it makes you feel better my accelerator pump is messed up.
Great progress. Ran some propane around the intake missed a vacum port. got the timming right and the truck idles nicely. I went out on saturday and got a B&M megashifter for my truck. Installed it and drove the truck around the block. :D there are stil a lot of things to be done. I will get pics soon.

X2 I'm happy for you!
Well it was a very loud drive hehe :D. I haven't installed the cooling fan yet so We only went around the block. It was pretty cold out thought.
Once we get the fan on where doing to put a dealer plate on the truck and go for a cruize to make sure we have all the gears in the tanny.

Here are the progress pictures I promised.
Here is the crossmember. We changed it so when the exhaust guy runs the pipe he doesn't have to bend it and it looks much cleaner.

This is the B&M megashifter I Installed on the truck. I realy like the shifter. It is much easier then installing the old shift linkage back in the truck

And finaly here are hte guages I got for the truck. I will probably install then one day this weekend.

Is it just me or does that tranny look really angled and not supposed to be?
Is it just me or does that tranny look really angled and not supposed to be?
I think it's the angle of the pic.
Well we had a few noises in the driveline when we went for a ride open header. Today we went for a short ride with the exhaust and it's the plate on the back of the driveshaft hanger bearring is lose so we will have to somehow weld that up.
Well just a little update. took the irocs off so I could drive my truck to work. Me and my dad tried setting the timing but we are have problems with the carb. (almost like a backfire when you get on it.) Got a new factory chrome grill and some chrome trim for christmas. Right now I'm doing a little research on what electric fan I want to use. Truck ran good all the way to work but he had to back the timing out. Here's a night shot of the truck I took the other night.

Oh yah I almost forgot. When I was stepping on it from a dead stop it felt like it was taking off from second gear. I don't know what thats about but I can manualy but it in first and shift from there no problem.
My speedometer is screwed up now to. I changed the speedo gear form one tranny to the other but now my spedometor read 35 when i'm doing 60. OH well I guess my truck won't have to many kilometers added on to the odometer.

yah lol. I have 4 junk rims with some decent tires on them that I will fry off eventualy. I was testing the sound of the exhaust and I gave it a little and lets just say I'll need new back tires every gas tank

Ryan --
Did you do anything to the rearend? I.E. limited slip, torsen or other set up? What is the motor rated at as far as horse power? You mentioned that you were debating carberator set up, if money would allow I would suggest a fuel injecton set up at some point in the future, better throttle response. I know money is tight, we all have that problem working on our toys :D. You can get a manifold that adapts the NOS and fuel injection also. Anyway congratulations on your build, great to have a Dad that is involved with his son doing a worthwhile project. I am sure you learned a ton of experience doing this and responsibility. Do everyone a favor and drive it RESPONSIBLE! I don't want to see ya as a statistic.

the rear end it a open diff with the stock 308 gearing. we might put a torsen but not right away. The truck is built for mainly cruzing and to go to car shows in. The motor is rated at 300hp. We are probably gonna keep it carbed for now. However I have a 327 we are going to build up in the future then we will experiment with the fuel injection an stick that in the s-10. Yah I don't usualy give my dad enought credit, he is a gm technicien with 30 years of experience. I got the truck from my grandpa when he passed away and my family wanted to sell it but my dad kept it so I could have it so when I was old enought that we could work on it. As for driving responsable, I am because I know how much work was put in the truck and it's like a member of the family.
Yah i'm still trying to convince my dad to take it to the track next year to see what it will run, but we still have to find a truck and trailer incase it breaks at the track.

Any new news?
Any new news?
wow I missed that post. Well I finaly bought a forced air heater for the garage and gas for my welder. I ended up making mounts for the rad and got it in place. My electric fans came is so I will hook it up this weekend.
I sanded primed, painted and installed the inner fenders on the truck. I mounted 2 toggle switches on the dash next to the radio one for the fuel pump the other for the fan.
This weekend I hope to wire the relays and clean up under the hood. I also have to replace the power steering o ring.
Then I'm hopeing to get the truck outside so I can work on the frame rails on the bed. I don't know what to do there. Any suggestions???? I think I'm going to buy the frame rails but the bed it starting to rust so I don't know if I should patche it then lineX then bed. Anyways will post pictures this weekend.

It is nice to here you are making progress. As for the bed, I have the same predicament. My bed supports are rotting out too. The rest of my bed is in great shape and it is already rhino lined so I want to fix them too. I will certainly be fallowing your progress closely so I can learn al I can before I do my own.
Well I have a good update. Got the relay wired in for the fuel pump and electic fan. The electric fan is also in.
I have been having troubles starting my truck. The fuel pump is running off ignition. The motor would try to start the act up like it was flooded. I realised that when you have the key at start ignition shuts off and the starter only turns. Therefore my electric fuel pump would not pump and my motor wouldn't be getting any fuel.
Todays lesson don't run the fuel pump off ignition or it may not pump during crank. :D
We also swapped out distributers for the third time and now it idles at about 600 to 700RPM. The response feels much better also.
I am hoping to get the bed off this week so I can work on it but I don't want to leave the truck outside for to long with a tarp on the back.
I tried taking pics but it is to dark outside.

That's weird. If the bowl of the carb is full of gas it should fire up regardless if the fuel pump is working at the time. Mine did anyway. My fuel pump and e-fans were wired in to ignition. With relays of course. Good to hear it's running smoothly.
Yah but I think it's because we have no choke. (It likes below freezing cold) I run the pump for a second then I have to pump the gas three times then it tries to fire then it gives up. Thats when I cycle the ignition to get it to start up.

I had a choke on mine but never used it. Never fired it up below freezing either. lol
Yah on sunday we switched distributers and it was realy super cold. The truck didn't like it at all.
Pictures.
Here are the two switches I mounted (under right side air vent next to the radio.

Here is a picture of the box. I had my garage door open when I started sanding and when I came home from school I realised all the rust dust is on the door. The rust isn't as bad as it looks. I already removed all the frame rails.
Always wear a breathing mask when sanding rust. lol I filles two air filters with rust.

I will be doing more bed work this weekend. There are a few holes in the box where I removed the frame rail that I need to patch. I am planning on linning the insode of the box with herculiner or line X. I also replaced the front top part of the box but forgot to take a picture before I but the box standing upwards.

Well my birthday was thursday.. Had to work.. but I got some sweet gifts. My parents bought me some reiken raptors 245/50/16 for the irocs rims. IT inspired me to finish the rims. I painted the inserts polished the rims then mounted the tires. They look sweet but now I realy need to lower the front of the truck 1 to 2 inches.
I also got a inline fuel filter, k and n recharge kit and my dad istalled a new heater core. I went to drive the truck to work to change the tires and my windows where foggin up . Got to work and the core was dripping out badly. Pictures to follow later tonight.

I love your truck even thought its a long bed...She really is turning out grand.
Ordered the herculiner for the box. Guy at work said I should have got the cheaper stuff but I saw how nice it looked on Rinkrats truck I didn't want to get the cheaper stuff.
The herculiner should be in in 5 to 10 bussiness days.
Going to be doing the finishing touches to the truck on saturday to get it more streetable.
Pics to come :D
I will also probably be picking up the line lock next week.

Well update with pics to follow soon. Truck goes on the road may 1st. :D I rolled on the herculiner bedliner. Lowered the front to match the rear ride and got an alignment. Just finishing up the little things before it goes on the road.
Also my sister got a new camera and I haven't checked but I think it records sound to get some exhaust clips for you guys.
Pics to come!!!

Give him my email. I will wash his truck any time he wants me too.
Well I have being very busy lately. Haven't even been on the site since may. Anyway, got a new windshield, also got a shaker hood from a trans am to fit to the s-10.
Will all the good progress, now my carb is being stupid and I can't figure it out. It's almost like the secondarys are opening and closing causing the motor to bog then go. I tightened the spring then stripped it so now I have no sencondarys. Timming is still not perfect.
pic to come.
