Black smoke is a rich fuel mixture and will foul your plugs if it is bad.
Blue smoke is oil burning in the combustion chamber, either
rings ( under load, driving or towing ), or valve guides if you see smoke
at first start-up while engine is cold.
A compression test would be a good start.
What kind of sending unit are you installing ?

If you are belching black smoke look for a vacuum leak or check out the coolant sensor.

Usually it's a quart a cylinder...check then add as needed. Dumb logic I know, but there you have it.

did u put the oil plug back in?????? it hsouldnt take more than 5 quarts to be full. i usually put in 4 then start it, so it fills the filter, then top it off.

if you do go to put a new engine in i suggest that you find a 4.3 that is/was in a full-sized Silverado or Seria(not spelled right I know), as I had to change the engine twice in the '91 S-10 I had, as the first replacement engine burnt more oil than the orginial and it came out of a S-10.

Any ways my point was if you are going to replace the engine, I suggest that you get it out of a running full-sized pick-up that still has the transmission in it, as if you find an S-10 with an engine that looks like it doesn't burn oil it, it is likely that it will sooner than you want as there is less air flow though a S-10 engine compartment than a full-size.

You will have to change the valve covers, mounts(motor & pulley), oil pan, oil pump, tbi, map senor, heat senors, fan, belt, distrubutor, headers/manifolds and probably the oil filter position on the full-size block so that it fits in a S-10, that is if you go this way. The best part of this is that all the parts that you need are in/on the S-10 engine, but I suggest replacing the sensors instead of using old ones. I belive that is everything that has to be changed on a full-sized block so it fits/works in an s-10. Take a couple of pictures of the orginial block before you start to take it apart and change over so you can make sure that you switched everything over that needs to be(might be helpful, might not be).

I have done this and it works, if you do it right.
