anybody know where to get pipe that is the same strength but a little bit smaller then the factory axel tubes. and also axels a little bit shorter than stock , don't have exact lenght maybe 3" at most. the rear is a 8.5" 10 bolt from a 78' trans am and its a posi :)!!! but it's a little too wide . the down side is the axels . but if it's cheaper than a new rear ? does anyone think that this rear would be any stronger than a stock rear? or would a powertrax locker in the stock rear be as strong as the trans am rear? and it might be cheaper , powertrax is around 400$.

Well the ring gear will be larger so it should be stronger, but is it worth all the work? I doubt it. What you gain will not be worth all the money and time you put into it. The locker will cost about the same when it is all said and done and it will be a hell of a lot easier to do. Also in how good of shape is that posi rear? They do wear out. So I would suggest just putting in the locker. I put one in my truck and it easy as hell. Also few things are cooler then a truck turning a corner and hearing the clicking of a locker.

money is pretty much the issue. i'm still in the beginning of this part of the truck . so other things need fixing first . and if the truck needs it ,it's getting done first. it will still go down the road as it is the posi part will just make it funner.

If you do the trans am rear you still have a 10 bolt rear end. If you are going to have the axles and tubes shortend you might as well do a 12 bolt, Ford 9 inch, or a Chrysler 8 3/4 with a removable center section. These are going to cost more but they will hold up to just about anything you throw at them. I run a 8 3/4 in a 91 with a LT1 and a 6 speed. That thing is almost impossible to break.
