water pump

hey guys...i have a 03 with 54000 miles on it and the mechanic says my water pump is leaking...and theyre charging me 250...just curious...how long does a water pump last and how do i know if it is leaking and need to be replace...and also how much is the average water pump with install cost...

they are easy to replace. look under the truck with a flashlight and look at the water pump, IF it is leaking, you will see a orange fluid comin out the bottom of it. i replaced mine at about 60,000 miles. I paid about 20 bucks for a new pump at O'rielly's auto parts. took about 20 minutes to install. never had anyone install one for me so i couldnt really tell you how much shop's charge. If I was doin it in my driveway, I would charge you maybe 50 bucks plus 20 for pump and little more for the coolant.

your water pump should last a lot longer than that. If i were you, I'd get s econd opinion and do it myself if that is the problem. $250 seems high, but that may be a new GM part + install which probably would be that much.
