I have a 1996 S10 with a 2.2L 4 cyl 5 speed manual. How hard would it be to put a 4.3 L Vortec in it, someone told me it should just go right in with my tranny, but will I need new motor mounts or anything else? Also will I have to have the exhaust all re-done, all I have now is stock everything with a glasspack muffler, so I will end up replaciing at it some point but can i leave it alone for a while? Any help or info is appreciated.

I believe the bellhousing pattern is different, I may be wrong but I think you are just as well off to throw in a v8 with a carb, and a muncie 4speed. That is something you don't see much. BTW, did I mention I hate AUTOMATICS!!!!!! J/K
But I seriously do not think your plan to put a 4cyl. trans on a vortec would be a good idea anyway, plus if you are going throught the trouble, you might as well go with a v8, 4sp, conversion.

I wanted the V8 but I got a really good deal on a 4.3L and thats why I was thinking about this. I dont want a gas hog either, this has to be my daily driver atleast through college, but I want more balls with it then that little 4 cyl has. The V8 is gonna cost me about 3-4X what it would to put this V6 in, so thats basically why Im not going all out with V8.

The tranny bolt patterns are completely different.

I had a feeling about this, but go kick the crap out of the guy telling you it will bolt up.LOL, and yes the 5speed vortecs are gold, but the 4cyl's 5sp, even if in some strange way it worked, would never be capable of handling the power of the vortec. You are actually better off to just go buy a vortec, 5sp. Just my 2 cents

I didnt think they offered the vortec with a 5 spd, im probably wrong but i thought i read that somewhere. So what I need to do is find a truck with a vortec that came factory with a 5 speed, how hard is this to find?

How much HP does a 4.3 Vortec put out? Good top end? And an even bigger question does anyone around NC have a 4.3 Vortec for sale? I don't trust junk yards when it comes to those kinds of things.

They are not easy to find in online listings, I think quite a few of the 98+ 2wd's have been totalled out. The only ones I have ever seen are at salvage yards(where i bought mine and took a week to finish rebuilding her) But I also believe that most people who own them must like them too much because you rarely see them for sale. I remember asking how many of you guys had the 4.3L 5sp in the last generation in an online post. Also, I have seen a few of your generation trucks with the 5sp vortec under the hood. Have fun looking, and hope you can track one down.

BTW, the 4.3L bellhousing pattern is the exact same as a small block chevy from any year. That is how i believe I can put a 6sp behind my vortec.

EDIT: The vortec v6 roughly has around 160-190hp, depending upon the year. They have excellent pickup from low speeds(similar to a stock sbc), and like the sbc, they require camshaft modifications to be made to give a better top end.
Good luck and have fun, while not getting "Exhibition of Speed" tickets
