Hey guys! I have a sneaking suspicion that my rear axle seal is bad (driver side). The symptoms are a whine when it first rolls after a long sit. My uncle has said that if there is heavy grease leaking down the tire then it's shot. This true? How much would it be to replace it and at what difficulty. I have the Hayes manual for my truck so I know the steps and all...just wondering. He said something else, can't remember it at this moment.

On another note I drove from South Carolina to North Carolina today with my parking break on! And I was wondering where all that smoke came from. Never really stopped the truck from free rolling anyway.

You should replace the bearings and seals on both sides while you have the shafts out.

yeah driving with the parking brake on is not good , and when there is heavy grease (gear oil ) leaking out past the seal at all then the seal is bad . you should be able to see real good with the drum off . and it 's not hard to do . just real smelly !!!

"Smelly"????? Why would you say that it is smelly? I have messed that stuff before and I smelled nothing but grease/gear oil and brake dust. No smells out of the ordinary… If anything the job is dirty/messy as hell.

Also check the surface of the axle shaft that the seal and bearing contact. If it is scored, you will have to replace the shaft or check with your local parts house there was a axle saver bearing for some rear combinations.

I feel ya dude thank god friday is payday. I had to replace both axel seals on my s10. I think it cost me about $170ish for everything (labor, and the parts)
