need help
Black smoke is a rich fuel mixture and will foul your plugs if it is bad.
Blue smoke is oil burning in the combustion chamber, either
rings ( under load, driving or towing ), or valve guides if you see smoke
at first start-up while engine is cold.
A compression test would be a good start.
What kind of sending unit are you installing ?

If you are belching black smoke look for a vacuum leak or check out the coolant sensor.

Usually it's a quart a cylinder...check then add as needed. Dumb logic I know, but there you have it.
